Legal Advice - Should I report someone on Reddit who is planning a crime?

Should I report someone on Reddit who is planning a crime?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:40 PM PST

Tl;dr: Do I have any legal liability for knowing about and not reporting this suicidal Redditor's plan to stalk his ex and hopefully get shot by her new boyfriend? Who should I report it to- Reddit or the police? I really don't want to get involved for fear of getting stalked myself.

    USA, multiple states.

I really wish I had no knowledge of this, but it's been weighing on me. Some guy befriended me on Reddit on a different account. He seemed nice at first, but it's become clear that he is very unstable. He has always obsessed about some girl that I'm not sure he was even officially dating. He told me he plans to show up at her house several states away uninvited. He somehow just found out her address, so he's basically stalking her. She told him not to come and mentioned that her new bf has guns. Dude is suicidal anyway, so his plan is to show up and hope that the new bf shoots and kills him. I obviously said everything I could think of to dissuade him. I asked him what if the guy doesn't want to shoot you, and he said he might do something to get the guy to act in self-defense, so basically threaten or attack him to the extent that the man has to use lethal force to defend himself. He doesn't seem to want to hurt either of them, but his delusional thinking makes me fear he could be dangerous.

I stopped responding to this guy. I haven't blocked him bc I know he'll just create another account and find me, so if I did block him, I'd have to kill off my Reddit account too. I haven't told him enough personal information for him to find me IRL (I hope!).

I do know a few things about his real identity including his full name, his Twitter and Google accounts, and the geolocation of where his mom lives in a different state but not her name or exact address necessarily. I don't know who this girl is but know what state she lives in. I don't know if this is even real or if it's some insane attempt at getting attention from me. He told me he was telling me this to say goodbye bc he's planning on being dead soon.

I don't want to do anything for several reasons:

1). I'm paranoid that he will somehow find a way to stalk me or retaliate against me if I do anything. I think it would be very obvious it was me.

2). The girl apparently knows he's coming, so she can take whatever precautions she deems fit.

3). I don't want to be the cause of the police being involved. Suicide by cop seems like a very likely outcome if the police show up or are able to apprehend him.

Why I'm questioning my decision not to act: 1). I could possibly contact the police in his mom's town and have them contact her. Maybe she can dissuade him or can find out the identity of this girl and warn her.

2). He gave me an update about what state he's in. I could fish for information to get him apprehended or at least find out an ETA for when he's planning on showing up to this girl's house.

3). I guess this is the main question for you guys. Do I have any legal liability for knowing about this and not reporting it to anyone? If I should report it, who should I report it to- Reddit or the police? If I report it to the police, I think I'd start with the police in his mom's town since that's the most information I have.

I reallllllyyy don't want to do anything, but I'm worried that maybe I should. Any general advice as well as legal advice is appreciated. Two therapists have already told me they think it's fine if I don't do anything and fade away from him. Maybe I should just block him so I can't be told anymore details about this plan.

Update: Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna sleep on it. This + anxiety + 🥃 = deal with this tomorrow

I gave away a couch for free on Craigslist, and now the person is trying to sue me for an injury.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:15 AM PST

I lived in Virginia. About a month ago, I gave away a couch before I moved. Yesterday, I received a demand that I pay medical bills for the person that took it.

Apparently, the the couch slid when he went to sit down and he injured his knee. He is claiming that I am at fault because I had taken the feet of the couch and neglected to tell him that they were missing.

I received a letter from a Chief of Police telling me my security system provider has been calling the wrong district for emergencies for the past 7 years. Can I use that to get out of my contract?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:24 AM PST

The COP states that they have let the provider know they are calling the wrong emergency call center several times since 2013, and that the company has not fixed that issue. It's such a common occurrence that they have a boilerplate letter they send to costumers of this particular company.

This affected me because I had a fire alarm in my basement when I wasn't at home. Luckily it wasn't anything serious. The company called a fire department that's nearly 2 hours from where I live instead of the one that is much closer. If it had been a real fire I am afraid that the first responders wouldn't get here on time; my basement is old and has some flammable stuff laying around, including knob and tube wiring.

    I'm in Ohio, USA.

    Thanks!

HOA Security Guards Acting Like Cops, are People Required to Treat Them as Such?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:31 AM PST

    Location: PA

In an effort to bring more money into the HOA, the HOA has equipped the security guards with radar guns and they now hand out "speeding citations" to offenders. These are not real tickets, they are fines to be paid directly to the HOA.

I don't know if this is pertinent or not, but because there are a couple restaurants in this HOA, anybody is allowed in, there are no rules or anything you need to sign to get into this HOA.

I have the following questions related to these practices:

    1. Are people legally required to pull over for security guards?

    2. When you are "pulled over" the security guards ask for your drivers license, proof of insurance, and registration, are you legally required to hand this over to them even though they are not real police?

    3. If you do not live in the HOA they ask you who you were visiting or knew so they can give that person the fine instead of you, are you required to give that information? They do this so they can tack the fine onto the HOA assessment of somebody who lives there as they know people who do not live there will probably not pay said "fine".

    4. If we do not give them this information they threaten to bring in the police, are you required to wait with them until police come and what will the police do if they do come?

    Can I call CPS?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:08 PM PST

So I'm in a bit of a tricky situation. Let me explain...

I have a friend who's a single parent. And while I haven't seen her physically abuse her child, Somethings have happened that make me really question if I need to speak up.

The parent works from home, overnights. She gets off around 6 AM. Now I understand that being a single parent while having to work overnights must be some level of Hell I haven't experienced. I get that it's hard. But for the past week, (because of talking to her) I know for a fact that the parent sleeps in until about 5 PM and the child (who is four years old) is left to themselves. She's told me herself that she's heard her kid ask for food, but was too tired to get up. So, as she put it "must have got it herself."

Other things too. I've seen this child safeguard food. Have witnessed the parent (every time I've been around them) telling her child to "shut the fuck up" and things like telling they're going to stab their kid. (Like they've told their child they're going to stab or strangle them.)

This kid hasn't been going to her online zoom meetings because the parent is sleeping in.

When I was babysitting this kid once she accidentally spilled a glass of juice. No big deal, it happens. She instantly backed away from me, started covering her ears and crying screaming "I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry!" (I don't have kids myself, but this seemed kind of drastic.)

I just don't know. I don't want to jump the gun or anything but all this gives me a weird feeling. I can't talk to the parent about my concerns because she's an extremely sensitive person and I don't see it going well. I don't know, I can't stop thinking about the things I've heard or witnessed and my whole concern is for the kid. The whole safeguarding food thing keeps sticking out as well.

My employer put a microphone at our desk and listened to me and my coworkers conversation

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:23 PM PST

So I work in California and work at the front desk. Today we got handed some policy's from the manager that me and my coworkers just did not agree with so we started to talk about them

Lately we haven't been getting along with our manager as he started to change a lot after covid and started to become a real A. For the sake of the post I'll name him todd

So we started to talk about Todd at the front desk and started to talk about how bad Todd has been as manager. Making new policy's while not following them. We made lots of comments about really disliking todd and saying how useless Todd really is Because he just comes in and really does nothing all day and does 0 communication with us.

Well long story short Todd comes in half an hour later telling us he's been listening to whole conversation via a hidden microphone that we had no idea he had And was angry that we said those things about him. We've had lots of personal conversations at times that we told one other and had no idea he could listen to us.

Is this legal? is the manager allowed to secretly tape us while working without telling us? We all knew he had cameras but this wasn't a camera it was literally a microphone set up just for him to hear us talk about things and listened long enough to hear us talk bad about him.

Edit 1: forgot to mention we never gave consent for them to record our conversation nor were we ever informed that they had a microphone. We also are in a semi public we have people walk through and talk to us at the front desk.

    FL Rolled back odometer.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:34 PM PST

I went to look at a used 2007 camry today w my husband and we both liked it. We decided to head to the bank but my heart was telling me something was off. I decided to pay the 40 dollars to check the carfax report.

Long story short, dude at the dealership was selling a car that supposedly had like 60000 miles, the odometer matched up, but the carfax report said 128,000 last time it was reported.

Obviously we went home instead and my husband gave them an angry call. The same listing is still up. This is fraud right? Should I report them to like, the bbb, police, or something?

Laid off from work. Company is keeping my personal belongings.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:32 PM PST

    Location: Jacksonville, Florida.

I started work with a [VERY big bank] last year as a contractor. Around the end of March of this year, they told us they were quarantining for 2 weeks (important) due to COVID. I forgot to grab a bunch of stuff from my desk but figured "meh, it's just two weeks".

So I've been working at home since April. Come about 2 weeks ago, we're told they're laying off a not-insignificant number of contractors. Hey, we're expendable. It's one of the risks of being a contractor.

The problem is, even though they want their laptop back immediately, we're being told we'll get the stuff from our desk back "if we open back up". They're making zero exceptions. They said it could be a couple months, a year or never. The contracting company says their hands are tied because they don't want to risk such a big client.

It's not like it was a calendar a couple of pens. I've got a couple of Yeti cups, a very nice pair of noise cancelling headphones (approx $400), pictures of my kids, etc. Even if it was just the calendar and a couple of pens, it's not right to essentially say "yeah, we own your stuff now".

My thoughts were to file with small claims court to get an order to allow me to retrieve my belongings. Is that an option or are there some better ones that anyone can think of?

    Thanks in advance!

Work won’t let me take off using my earned time for a breast reduction.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:31 AM PST

So I was approved for a breast reduction (completely covered by insurance after trying for years) and can't use FMLA at work bc I haven't been there a year (have been there 10 months). I NEED this surgery and my work is being so difficult. So I applied for a leave of absence which uses my own earned vacation time and sick time (which. I have never used any of).

HR told me to submit a letter from my doctor. Stating what I'm having done and making sure it's medically necessary. My letter literally states "Please excuse Taylor from __ to __ for a medical condition requiring a surgical procedure that is medically necessary."

Now my work is saying I need to give complete disclosure. If I'm stating I have a condition and need a surgical procedure, why do they need all this shit?! They told me it needs to state medically necessary and that it does. I didn't give full details because she said it may be deemed cosmetic. So I can't win. I'm a registered nurse and I need two weeks off using MY EARNED vacation pay. People get two weeks off now days for having a cough.

Does anyone know if I can take legal action if this is not approved? Why do I need to give details if I gave them exactly what they asked for and a DOCTORs letter letting them know I needed this procedure?

This surgery would change my life. It's 100% insurance approved. It isn't cosmetic. My breasts are disgustingly giant and have caused me pain/numerous issues for over 15 years. This HR lady knows what it is and must be upset I didn't include it. She never told me to. She told me to make sure the letter says medically necessary. Now she's saying her higher ups probably won't approve it "without complete disclosure" I just don't know why it matters when the doctor stated exactly what I was told to state in the letter.

Is there any action I can take when/if this isn't approved? This is in Wisconsin.

Mother has illegally been putting vehicles under my name

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:47 AM PST

My mother is a horrible mother. She registered a vehicle under my name without my consent and has gotten many tickets with it. I live in Arlington, Virginia and got ticketed by Fairfax County for parking violations in Centreville. My mother has done this with my other brother as well. She's screwed so many family members and many have taken her to court or excommunicated with her. I know she must have a connect at the DMV. I don't know how to stop her unless I find that person that has been illegally doing this for her. I'm afraid it's going to hurt my credit because the tickets are overdue. Freeze my credit? How should I pursue this?

Served with assault papers, never even heard of the accuser

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:15 AM PST

(NC)I was served with papers today for an assault that happened 2 weeks ago on the other side of the state, to a person I have never heard of. I haven't been far from home in months. I have GPS proof that I was at home when the crime occurred, is there anything else I can do?

(Edit) I also believe the police may have mixed my identity with a local that has the same name as myself and a criminal record, leading to me being served instead of him.

Failure to schedule my surgery by the medical team is costing me $3,000 out of pocket.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:29 PM PST

Very long story short to start, my medical team admittedly failed to schedule my surgery in a timely fashion. So, instead of all of my surgery and rehab being covered 100% by insurance and being completed by the end of 2020, I now have to pay out of pocket to re-meet my deductible for 2021 for this surgery and rehab to take place in 2021.

Is there any way I am able to get this financially covered by them since they screwed it up and have admitted so?

I spoke to them last time today and they stated 'you didn't re-schedule soon enough after we realized our mistake and you could have.'

    I'm in Arizona.

Fraud charge from large online retailer - retailer and bank refuse reimbursement

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:43 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I'm posting on here, hoping I can find some help. I'm in Canada.

On Oct 27th, I noticed pending charges of three separate transactions adding up to over 400$ from a large online retailer (let's call it A). I promptly called my bank, and disabled my card and filed a fraud report. I messaged the seller asking her to cancel the orders (she replied and said she would). I called A, and spoke to a customer service agent, who sent me an email stating he had cancelled the orders on his part and sent my account to their fraud department. After, I got three emails from A's fraud team stating they had cancelled the orders again and I should be expecting my refund. However, two days later, on Oct 29th, these charges still processed onto my card. Over a month has passed, and my bank and A still both refuse to refund my money.

My bank states that because I have an A account, I need to dispute with A, and not them. They also said there's no proof that these purchases weren't made by me. However, I called them right away, and have emails from A confirming someone hacked my account. The tracking numbers from the orders work but are random. I think the hacker used real tracking numbers from other orders.

I repeatedly called A and I had four customer service members tell me I will get my refund. However, the last time I called, the rep couldn't find the records of the fraudulent orders, because apparently these were wiped from my account records. I was told they had no proof these transactions happened, and so they can't do anything from their side, and I have to contact my bank. I still have the emails stating they cancelled the transactions. I spoke to a manager, who said there was nothing they could do.

I am stuck because both companies are pushing responsibility, and I am now down over 400$. I'm very frustrated, and would appreciate any advice.

    Thank you!

TLDR; someone hacked an online shopping account and made multiple transactions. I reported it to my bank, the online retailer, and the seller, and was told by all three these transactions were blocked. Days later, I was still charged and now online retailer and my bank both refuse to refund my money. Any advice?

Can my Landlord keep my deposit because I was a "difficult tenant"

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:16 AM PST

I'm kind of frustrated with my landlord. He rents out his basement as an apartment and I have renting from him for several years. In my eyes I was a very good tenant. I always paid on time, never any noise, didnt destroy anything... At some point after I moved in he began trying to sell his house. No big deal to me the lease is on a month to month basis and I can move out of he has a buyer. However, when he started having showings for the house he wanted to show off the apartment and he told me I had to keep it clean. Clean by his standard meant zero clutter, no clothes, no dishes, no mail, nothing. Sometimes i had no notice for when a showing was going to happen. I would get a text at work saying by the time I got off someone would be in my apartment. My land lord is saying because he had to go in there and tidy up that he is going to keep my deposit. There were also several times he was harassing me about about cleaning and I didnt get back to him right away. In his eyes this made me a very "difficult tenant". Is this sufficient grounds for him to keep my deposit or should I ask him for it? I feel like he is just being petty.

Edit: I live in the US. State: Missouri

Aggressive neighbors are causing us issues (PA)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:50 PM PST

    Philadelphia, PA

I've been living in a first-floor apartment for four years. The lease clearly states the rules about quiet hours, as well as smoking rules (you cannot smoke in the building, or within 20 feet of it)

In August, two tenants moved in to the basement unit directly underneath us. Since they moved in, they have been regularly having big, loud parties, and smoking lots of weed inside. Sometimes this would go as late as 5:00am, even on weeknights. I don't have any moral objection to smoking weed, but our vents are connected so our apartment smells like weed like all day. I have been keeping logs of when they smoke or violate the quiet hours by more than 2 hours (I'm not a fun-killer so I think a 2 hour buffer is more than reasonable). A few times I've even had to call out sick from work because they kept us up all night and I got no sleep, so it's definitely messing with our livelihood.

We have tried texting them about the issues, and at first it worked, but after 4 or 5 times, they got frustrated and told us to just move to the suburbs of we don't like it (this was at 2:30am on a weeknight) as well as some other unpleasant things. To be clear, the correspondences have always been polite from our end. Since then, my fiance and I have refused to text or speak with them, and instead go through the landlord.

We've probably talked to the landlord 10 times about the issues and the landlord is very frustrated with their behaviour. They've told the basement tenants to stop many times, but they believe they cannot get evicted due to covid, so they refuse to stop. The landlord has started talking to their lawyer about it, but the realistic timeline for anything like am eviction seems to be nearly as long as their lease (until July).

One time, the landlord was in the area and smelled the weed and called the police. The police came, but there was no proof so they just made a report and left.

My fiance and I aren't the only ones who have complained. One other has complained about the basement tenants, and we've spoken with the rest of the building (3 other units) and everyone can smell the weed and hear the parties, and are frustrated. One claimed it was driving him crazy.

Today, at about 2pm, one of the tenants must have received another complaint from the landlord, and seems to solely blame me and my fiance for this, so he came up to our apartment and knocked on our door so aggressively that things fell off our wall and broke. I was dumb and opened the door, and he proceeded to full-on yell at my fiance and I for about 20 minutes straight. It was very aggressive and I felt quite threatened. He said that if we keep reporting them to the landlord, he's going to ramp things up and have parties every night and smoke inside every day, as retaliation.

He seemed to want to broker a compromise, but I'm not interested in anything outside of what's specified in the lease. Also, any time I tried to talk about a compromise, he would yell over me anyway, so I don't know what his real goal was. He also seems I think we called the police on them. (We did not)

We talked again with our landlord and he basically said that if the basement tenants do anything bad again, call him (the landlord) but that would just result in further retaliation. We don't feel safe, honestly. He also told us to take pictures of the tenants smoking so there is proof, but that seems like a weird request.

So, where we're at is that we feel unsafe in our own home, we can't go stay anywhere due to covid, our landlord can't or won't take any actual action against them, so we're feeling really defeated. My fiance had like 3 breakdowns today after he yelled at us.

    What can we do???

(Arkansas) am I allowed to talk about my rapist openly and use his name?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:35 PM PST

Sorry this is long, I cant really tl;dr it.

Am I allowed to show the face of the man who raped and molested me when I was a child to people?

Hes in a position where he's around kids. He takes kids on church travels and sleeps in the same rooms as the kids. Im not the only girl he did this to. One girl I talked straight to and she had the same story as me. I then talked to his ex wife to find out he had been showing porn to and touching her (then) 4 and 6 year old daughters. She caught him. This all came out this year.

I did come out, I was threatened for "slander". But my step dad is obviously fighting against his family bringing a lawyer in.

I did report him, the cops said since it happened to long ago its highly unlikely anything will happen. They took me seriously though. I ended up backing away, the cop said it would be a painful situation. I have been in psych wards a couple of times and have bad mental illnesses so I didnt continue the case. The cops have been searching for his cousin who threatened me, to serve a protection order. I also have someone on my side who is aware of the cover up of the accusation his ex wife that happened about 20 years ago. His ex told his parents and they had a church meeting where they decided to cover up his actions.

Can he come after me for slander for telling people who know us what he did to me? Many people already know because id told people it was going on when i was little, id been asking for help my whole life telling friends parents and friends. I also have been talking about it in therapy since I was a teen, after it stopped. This wasn't just brought up, I have a proof ive been talking to people about this for many years.

Im not scared, but if he did get the balls to be stupid enough to take me to court for slander, what would it look like? How would it play out? It's my word (and the word of 1 victim and the mom of 2 other victims) against his. His brother also blatantly lied about me on a Facebook post then deleted his comments (i got screen caps) where he claimed his daughter, my cousin, said certain things about me. She admitted they made it up and she wasn't a part of it.

I dont want to be quiet. When we see them in public they loudly talk about me and my mom being psychotic liars. They post stuff on Facebook using my name and telling people im a liar. It hurts to tolerate this.

Do I have any avenues or do I have to just deal with knowing hes around kids while they tell people im a psychotic liar? (he gets touchy with my cousins friends and talks about their boobs and periods!) Am I already in trouble for telling people he raped me and showing conversations I had with the other victim? I have severe illnesses due to his actions, do I just need to deal with the fact he will be free to continue his grooming and possible assaults on young girls??

Car stolen from the repair shop, their insurance says they are not liable.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:33 PM PST

I live in Nevada. I dropped my car off at a repair shop, they secured the keys in a lockbox and the car sat in their parking lot. The night it was dropped off it was stolen from their lot with a total of 7 cars stolen and 14 cars broken into. The car was recovered 2 days later by the police with damage to all of the key cylinders. The insurance company for the repair shop is telling me they are not liable for the damage to the car because the repair shop did their duty by securing the keys; they are saying that it would be no different than if the car was stolen from in front of my house and I am liable for any damage to the car.

Does this sound correct? Any recourse for me?

    Thanks in advance.

Neighbors roofers damaged our vehicle with shingles hitting it (oregon) refuses to pay for damages beyond paint.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:13 PM PST

Hi there, really appreciate any information that you can provide.

My neighbors had there roof redone by a local company. My gfs car was parked in our driveway. The workers were letting shingles fall off the roof as they worked. The shingles caused damage to the left side and top of the vehicle. Damages include scratches in the paint, windows, trims. My gf discovered the damages to her vehicle and asked to speak to the person in charge on site.

First they offered to bring a buff kit and buff out the scratches but I went out and told them respectfully that they are roofers and not car detailers. He understood and provided their license number and told us to get quotes for repairs. From one of two of our local repair shops.

Now we have our quote of $2,600 and they being very disrespectful. Calling my gf "little miss" when addressing her directly. They are currently telling us they will not be paying for anything beyond the paint and that they want us to go get another quote from a different shop that is known to be cheaper in our area(that only paints)

We did not file a police report because they said they were happy to take care of it and to get started on quotes right away.

Are they liable for all of the damages including windows and trims? Is there any case without a police report? Would I need a lawyer to argue for this quote to be fulfilled by the original shop? Can they force us to go to a different shop? Any other advice that might be helpful.

I'm happy to provide any other information you all may need. Thank you so much.

My apartment caught fire and they're trying to blame me

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:51 PM PST

I'm in Indiana The kitchen in our apartment caught fire while my fiance and I were out. Our pets died in the fire. We didnt have renter's insurance so all of our stuff cannot be replaced. We left around 1:10 and the fire department was there by 2:12. it was out in less than 5 minutes. They first told me it was my dogs who had somehow climbed on the counter and turned on the burners and put something on the stove. Today the fire chief interviewed us and was saying the fire started on the floor of my kitchen. They said they burners were not on and only a loaf of bread was on the stove. He was basically trying to get me to say my fiance started the fire and quoted him having a felony from years ago and interrogated him the same way. And he also stated that I told someone I was glad the fire happened and it was a good thing etc. Which is not true. They said stuff only my landlords would've known so idk if they're investigating bc of the shady landlords we have telling them they think we did it. We didn't. We had no motive. We didnt have renter's insurance and our dogs and cats died in the fire which is the worst part of it all. We would trade anything for the animals to be alive. I'm honestly freaking out and idk if its normal to video tape a session with a fire investigator and we were interviewed separately. Obviously we had the same story. I dont know if this is normal or if it's time for me to lawyer up. As far as we know there was no accelerant. Never was mentioned and idk if they would. They asked if we would take a polygraph if it came up and we said yes. They didnt set one up tho and also told us we could go in and get our stuff. But our landlords wont let us in. Should I get a lawyer or wait and see if the police become involved?

Hospital sharing extremely sensitive information without my consent?!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:17 PM PST

    Location: Canada

Around 2 months ago at 18 years old I was admitted to the emergency department because I was suicidal. I did not tell my [abusive] family as they triggered the situation in the first place. The general hospital moved and admitted me to the mental hospital.

The following day, the doctor who saw me said my parents called. I did not tell my parents where I was, only that I was at the hospital so they didn't file a missing person report. So they must've called around.

So that's fine right? They called and you didn't confirm or deny that I've been admitted because I'm a legal adult. No, the hospital told them I'm here and also why. Without my consent.

Fast forward to last week, I'd just turned 19 years old. I had a seizure and had to be admitted to the same general emergency room. I was fully conscious and have a statement from doctor in writing (the report/chart) that my brain activity was perfectly normal, CT scan and all so it's not as though I was mentally compromised and my parents had to take over for me, seeing as I'm an adult.

I never saw this detailed chart, didn't even know it existed. I found out about it because it was pinned on the bulletin board in our kitchen. It details my mental illness, that I'm suicidal, and then other topics such as the CT scan results. I was again not asked for consent for this detailed written health history to be given to my parents.

I feel that because I'm a petite teenager they didn't think they had to ask for my permission.

    These are my questions:

    1. Was the mental hospital correct to inform my parents when they called that I had been admitted and why, seeing as I was already safe in their custody? And without my consent at that?

    2. Was the general hospital correct to give those detailed documents to my parents without my permission?

    3. I feel that because I'm small and look young they didn't feel they needed to respect my rights as a legal adult. Do you think this is the case?

    4. I want to get justice for what was done seeing as these breaches of privacy have caused me severe psychological distress, but don't know where to start. Where would you start?

Am I responsible to pay for a fence that blew over before I owned the home?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:12 AM PST

My fiancé and I purchased a home that closed on 11/7 which was a week after some pretty nasty winds in the area. Turns out the fence that separates the back yard from the neighbors yard has a nasty lean towards their side. It is unnoticeable from our side of the fence. Our offer on the home included a contingency for the seller to remain in the house for 7 days after closing before we would get the keys. A couple days before we got the keys, our agent explained about the fence and said the neighbor was asking the seller to help pay for the it. She gave us the neighbors phone number so we called her one evening within the 7 day period before getting the keys. This was about 2 weeks after the fence fell. At this time, before we have taken residency of the home, the neighbor tells us that the seller is refusing to pay for the fence and is now asking us to split the cost to pay for the fence.

I understand that home ownership includes these responsibilities to pay for fences on property lines but the thing that keeps sticking out to me is that we did not own the home when the fence fell. Additionally, if they had the fence repaired at the time that it fell then it would have been fixed before we owned the home and it would not be our obligation - but they waited possibly because the seller would not pay. I know it takes a while to fix a fence but regardless it seems like the timing and hesitation made it our problem and just because the seller refused to pay.

As a compromise to maintain a healthy relationship with our neighbors who have lived there almost 30 years, we are considering an offer to pay for 25% of the cost of the repair.

I am interested to know what our responsibility is legally before we move forward with that discussion. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are located in Southern California

Two months and still haven't received security deposit back

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:39 PM PST

This is my first reddit post so forgive me if I make any errors.

I moved out of my apartment in Arizona two months ago and have yet to receive my security deposit back. I have contacted the apartment and they told me they're still working on it and will expedite it but still nothing. According to AZ law, they have 14 business days to return the deposit and it's been well over that timeframe. Should I sent them a demand letter requesting the deposit back? I read online that if they do not return, I am entitled to 2x the amount. Do I request my exact deposit amount back or do I ask for 2x and how much more time am I supposed to give them? When giving my notice I even told them that I am choosing not to renew my lease due to have lost my job due to COVID so they are already aware that my financial situation is not great; I think it's very annoying for them to withhold my deposit while aware of my situation. I was a model tenant, always paying my bills on time and never complaining, and made no damages to the property or my unit.

I would like guidance on how I should proceed since talking to the apartment office is not doing any good.

Wedding cancelled, no refunds or rescheduling per contract, do we have recourse? [CO-USA]

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:19 PM PST

tl;dr: Wedding cancelled as a result of government mandate related to the pandemic. The contract we signed does not have a specific force majure clause concerning pandemics or really anything specifically, it just says no refunds and no rescheduling. Do we have recourse?

The language in the contract is as follows:

Space Reservation Fees and all payments made are non-refunable if the event is canceled, and non-transferable to a new date. Should Clients propose to change the event date, it shall constitute a cancellation of the existing contract.

Clients agree to the no refund/no date transfer policy set forth above... [x] If the event is cancelled within 60 days of the event, the full remaining balance of all estimated charged will be due to Company.

Obviously, we did not propose a cancellation or a change to the event date so I'm wondering if we have any recourse in this instance as a result of the damages we have occurred as a result of the venue's non-performance? The cash at stake here is about $7K right now.

[PA] Real estate agent lied about home warranty

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:36 PM PST

My wife and I recently purchased a house, had a home inspection done, and it found some deficiencies that we wanted addressed. We attempted to get the sellers to fix all of them, prior to close, and they did fix a few of the issues but we were told by our realtor that a vast majority of the remaining issues were fixable by the home warranty that we were being provided with (from the sellers), so we don't need to push for the sellers to fix them.

We were assured by our realtor that these items could be fixed by simply making a single home warranty claim after the sale and we believed the agent (of which I have text message and email correspondence asserting the agent's absolute certainty about how it would be covered when I questioned it).

Unsurprisingly after going through with the home purchase none of the aforementioned items were covered as they were pre-existing conditions and now we're stuck with the repairs.

Do we have any grounds for recourse and if so what do you suggest?

Identity theft and cybersecurity breach with hospital surgeries???

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:55 PM PST

I am a blogger in Los Angeles, California. On my hospital records there is a scoliosis diagnosis and surgery for which i never went for. The so-called doctor that did 'my' surgery called and asked to speak to me and is talking as if I was the one that had the surgery. When I didn't. I noticed online, people viewing my blog started donating money in my name to charities for scoliosis and are now very angry after learning that the surgery never occurred. Online, I had my social media and youtube accounts hacked and the hackers posted very convincing things that made it look like I had had the surgery which led fans to feel sorry for me and donate in my name. Some people even started getting the inspiration to get scoliosis surgery themselves and are now understandably fuming mad that I 'lied' to them. This is a very strange case of identity theft IMO, I've never seen this. They didn't steal my credit cards and clean me out of money. They just went and made it look like I got a surgery and made everyone online and friends/family feel sorry for me.

    Enough said.

What i've done is filed an identity theft case with the local police and taken down my accounts. But I'm lost right now.

My question is, now that I've contacted the cops, what is the procedure that I'd need to do to get this off my medical record??? So, what information would I need to get together in the meantime? I'd like to be prepared with everything to get this sorted ASAP as the holiday season isn't really the greatest time to be dealing with this, nor is a global pandemic.

Any personal advice on dealing with the angry fans/family/friends would be appreciated as well.
