Update: Bullied by coworkers who knock my cap off my head a dozen times a day.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:44 AM PDT

Update (former post) because I used your advice and it helped. When I went back to work I talked to my boss about the bullying and them knocking off my cap and I said it's making me miserable but again he didn't care. So I said that what they are doing is harassment and because they make fun of my speech impediment it's discrimination and if he doesn't do anything he's responsible for it. I saw he was pissed but still he talked to his boss. Then when he came back he yelled at me and the bullies for creating trouble and I thought we were going to be fired but that was it. But then the next day the owner came (that rarely happens) and he talked to my boss and then to me, he told me the bullying would stop and to tell him if it didn't. At first the guys who were bullying me were moved to another part of the shop so they wouldn't be with me but the next day one of them was fired, not sure if it's over the bullying. Anyway it's good now thanks to you and I don't need to find a new job.

Edit: thank you very much for all the awards, that's very kind and I appreciate them but please don't spend your hard earned money on me, donate to your favorite charity instead! Thank you everyone again.

Help! Sister used my name when arrested for possession of heroin (NJ)

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 03:31 PM PDT

My sister has been an active heroin user for about 6 years- plenty of arrests, warrants, etc. My fiance and I were both picking up applications for our firearms purchasing ID today. Out of curiosity, I ended up searching NJ municipal court database for both our names. Lo and behold I almost pass out when I see "I" was arrested in June for possession of CDS (heroin). So far I've contacted the municipality where the arrest was made, the case was moved the superior court- contacted them left a few voicemails, and had someone in the criminal division give me a call back.

I was pretty much told that it's going to stay on my record since it's an alias now used by my sister (she gave my name and the wrong birth year) and I will have to carry a letter with me in case I ever need to prove it wasn't me (and also to give to future employers..- i work in finance and I really would prefer my name to be clear!). I called the municipality that I live in to file an identity theft report and they told me that they couldn't do much besides put a note in their system- no report was filed. Is there any way to get this OFF my record? I took a few days off for the first time all year and was hoping to enjoy it after a very stressful year and throw this on top of it... no idea where to even turn! I appreciate any help!

A puppy breeder gave me the wrong puppy but she now wants it back. I want to keep the puppy she gave us. What should I do?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:00 PM PDT

I purchased a dog last week and drove to a breeder to purchase it. She gave me a dog and I drove back home with it. I have been feeding it and taking care of it sense then. Now, a week later, the breeder wants the dog back. She says it was a different dog then I purchased, and that she wants it back. The dog I was supposed to get is in New York, and was shipped to the owner who was supposed to have the dog I was given. I want to keep the dog and I feel like I have really bonded with it. The person in New York is accusing me of stolen property and threatened to send to police to my house to take the dog. Am I legally obliged to give her the dog? Is there anything I can do??? Please help ASAP!

[NC] UPS and FEDEX are delivering other people's packages to my house. Their physical locations are unstaffed and they say they can't do anything. What do I do with their mail?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 12:06 PM PDT

This is a cross post from the UPS subreddit with more detail. I'm at my wit's end because I feel both bad for the people who aren't receiving their items and I'm also unsure of what I should legally do.

This has been going on for six months but it has happened in the past. UPS and FedEx are currently dropping packages off at the wrong address- my house- for addresses that range from on my private lane to across town. A few of them have only been marked with a number such as '264' and that's it. In some cases I only know it's from one of these services because I've caught their vans leaving but they never stop.

Both of these companies tell me there is nothing they can do if I do not provide a tracking number or equivalent. Unfortunately, the first few packages were clearly labelled for my neighbours so I simply gave it to them. Others I tracked down on Facebook. However, the number of packages is now sitting at 8, with three of them in my garage. The biggest problem is one of them is only labelled with a house number, nothing else, despite my seeing the UPS van throw it in the garden. Which leads to the second complication- the two other packages were carelessly dumped in the mud and the cardboard is so soaked the labels have turned to mush.

Between these remaining 3 packages, the monetary value is at least $2000. And neither company will do anything to stop these bizarre and presumably unethical deliveries nor will they just take the damn things back.

After visiting their field (?) offices one is completely shuttered and the FedEx office is inside another building that is currently not enterable by the public due to Covid.

I am at a loss of what to do. People are losing out on serious money and it shouldn't be my responsibility to fix these mistakes. I am also concerned because I don't want to be accused of mail theft.

What legal responsibilities do I have here and is it something I should go to the PD for? Sorry if this is the wrong flair.

Just purchased newly built home on pond lot and pond was removed one week after moving in.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:46 AM PDT

Purchased a spec home in a new addition on a lot that backs up to a pond. There are around ten occupied homes in the addition and we were the first ones on this pond. We had our offer accepted a couple months ago and just closed on the purchase 2 weeks ago after waiting on the home to be completed.

One week after living there and with no notification e came home one day to see the pond drained and equipment moving dirt around. The pond hadn't been finished and we assumed they were simply grading the perimeter for seed. Just yesterday after noticing they were seeding all the way across the bottom, we realized this was no longer planned to hold water. We contacted the builder and they explained that it was being converted to a dry pond or detention pond. More or less, a drainage ditch. I can't imagine this decision was made and carried out in less than a weeks time since after we closed on the sale.

Our concern is then, since the builder/developer sold us the home listed as a pond lot, but with intention to remove the pond, is there any legal action we could take. This will surely decrease the resale value of our home as well as nearby lots.

landlord’s house rules are crazier than a nunnery

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 01:03 PM PDT

landlord is turning this house into a nunnery

Is my landlord crazy? Im 22 and just moved into a house in jersey My mates are new too.

my land lord has a long list of rules here are a few - people from the second floor and attic can not enter the kitchen which is now exclusive for the people live on the ground floor. me and my mates from the second floor and attic have no kitchen. -no visiting the first floor. - no reuse-able plates or Tupperware or utensils . Only ones that can be discarded right away. - nothing hung or taped onto the walls -windows must never be opened - no overnight guests - no showering after 10 - bath mats must be dragged from the bathrooms to be left in our rooms. no bathmats are allowed to be left in the bathroom. -nothing can be left in the bathroom not even soap - no liquor no smoking - we have cameras all around the house but not our rooms or bathrooms - we have to give our mac ids so her husband can check our browsing history. no watching things illegally, no porn. - no food or snacks can be stored in our shelves - no electrical appliances , no microwave oven or mini fridge, toasters, electrical blankets, kettles, fans , heaters. - rooms must be perfectly clean and in tip top shape when inspected.

those are only some of the things that have happened

and here are some things that have happened

Ive been here for almost two weeks. recently my landlord told us that we would have her husband and her visit after three to reroute wifi. Her husband shows up at 1:55 while some of us are in zoom meetings for class, and begins to look at our rooms right away. he looks at my friends room and yells at her for having a poster and threatens to evict.

we also have these tiny devices in our rooms. and hallways. we have no idea what they are. we were told we has free laundry but we don't. you have to put coins in the laundry machine. The girls who live on the first floor get free coins. the girls who live on the first floor can enter our premises to use our bathrooms but we cant step one foot in their territory.

Hospital is refusing to let my Mom stay overnight to advocate for my mentally impaired, terminally ill father

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 06:38 PM PDT

This is such a crazy scenario I am just baffled that it can possibly be happening.

A few days ago, my dad had to go into the hospital, and due to covid, they are not allowing people to stay overnight. If this were a normal illness, I would understand.

However, my Dad has terminal brain cancer, which has greatly affected his cognition. He is also paralyzed on his left side as a result of the surgery so he is not independent in any way.

As a result of his brain cancer affecting his cognition, he is not able to advocate for himself. He oftentimes will just reply "yes" to whatever the nurses ask him regardless if it's true or not which leads to poor medical care. He desperately needs someone there for him at all hours.

My mom has durable medical power of attorney but the hospital staff continues to force her to leave when visiting hours are over, despite the fact that my dad is in a great deal of pain from complications from his brain cancer, and has no way of accurately communicating his needs to the hospital staff. She has talked to the staff multiple times about his needs, and even has the hospitals own policy on paper which explicitly states they allow people to stay overnight when the patient can't advocate for themselves. She even has a note from one of his other doctors stating he needs someone there with him at all times.

If he was in good hands, we wouldn't be worried, but they leave him to suffer for hours on end while he is crying in pain, they forget to give him his proper medications. He is absolutely not in good hands and we are just at our wits end as to what we can do.

Is there any legal recourse we have? My mom has tried to contact everyone in the hospital that she can to resolve the situation and they brush her off every time.

I apologize if this post seems rambly but I am emotional and very upset that my dad may die in pain and alone.

    11yo Neighbor

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:51 AM PDT

Over the last several months, I've spent a lot of time with the 11yo boy who lives downstairs. His father has been in jail his entire life and they have never met. His mother overdosed on heroin in 2017. He lives with his grandmother.

Grandma had three kids - one died, but has a daughter. The other died, but had my neighbor. There's one left, but he is in and out of rehab and an unmedicated, dangerous bipolar man accused of murdering his wife and stealing from Grandma.

Grandma had a stroke a couple months back and the boy stayed with Grandma's sister. The dead son's daughter seems to be the one in the family that isn't like the rest. Sober, educated, working. She shows up to make sure the boy does his homework and has groceries to cook for himself. I've taken to letting him hang out at my place for food and videogames and to keep him away from the drug-dealing 12yo's in the apartment complex behind us.

Over this time, I have absolutely grown to love this child. He is smarter and deeper than any 11yo in my family and we often have conversations about pain, and choices, and the path he is on with the neighborhood kids. He's began to shun the hooligans, preferring to be with me than them. I want to be clear that I have a daily relationship with his grandma, her sister who is staying with her as a caretaker, and his aunt who is busy but as involved as possible.

My concern is this-- Grandma doesn't make it, the elderly sister won't be around much longer, the aunt is a nurse working 14hr shifts. What can I do? How do I ensure that when the inevitable terrible reality comes crashing down, this beautiful child isn't lost to the system and unaccessible?

Can the grandmother name me as guardian in the event of death even though I'm not family? How easy or difficult will it be to get this taken care of? I know I have not beein involved with this family for very long, but my feelings for this boy are very real. It's keeping me up at night. Under normal circumstances, I would obviously wait a while and make sure the relationship with the family is much more solid, but strokes often reoccur and I fear waiting until it's too late and losing him to the foster system.

I am a single man and never wanted kids and I am absolutely shocked and quite emotional about the way I feel for this child. I think a big reason I didn't want kids was the sacrifice, but I already sacrifice my personal life and frienships to be an influence to this child and I've never felt more secure in my decision. This is what's right. This is someone who needs me and I love him. I would get a second job and a cheaper place with a longer commute to work in a heartbeat to become this boy's legal guardian.

I plan to sit down with the aunt and broach the subject sooner than later.

Can my son refusing to come home be considered a lock out? [16 year old - Florida]

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT

My son lived with me for over four years before moving back with his mom a little over a year ago. He and his mother ceased communication with me roughly four months ago. On 8/17 I was informed that he had been arrested and is being charged with 20 felonies for breaking into and stealing cars while armed with a knife. The CPS investigator let me know that his mother refused to take custody of him upon his release from the juvenile detention center that he is currently incarcerated at. I stated that I would pick him up and he can live here upon release, but that I was concerned because he still refuses to speak with me. (Sidenote: he told the JDC administrator that is because I made him do homework and participate in extracurriculars and it's too hard.) After expressing my concern the CPS investigator told me that if I don't pick him up or make arrangements for him to live in alternative housing prior to release that she would file a case plan against me and it would be considered a lockout. I reiterated that I am willing to allow him to live with me and do not want him in alternative housing and she insists that it is still a lockout even if he refuses to come home with me. Can anyone provide clarification on if I will be in trouble if I am making the effort to have him with me and he refuses?

I was robbed. I know who did it.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:36 AM PDT

My boyfriend and I are in between moving into a new place. For the time being, the majority of our stuff was placed in a storage unit. Wednesday we went to the storage unit to start moving our stuff into the new place. The lock was gone and our stuff was gone. Everything from furniture, several boxes of clothes, TVs, DVDs, to stuffed animals, bedding, my birth certificate and college diploma. Almost everything we had. Maybe this is tmi but the fucker even stole my *** toys. It's over $10,000 worth of stuff. The only things that were left was a box of my notebooks/diaries, my boyfriend's shoes and our matress. One box was turned over and clearly smashed through. The box of notebooks had been ripped opened when previously it was taped.

Luckily the owner of the storage unit was there and he immediately started going over security footage. We called the police and filed a report within an hour of the discovery.

This is what was found on the camera: On Saturday, a man in a blue truck drove to our storage unit. He moved stuff from our storage unit to a different storage unit in the same facility. Then he replaced our lock on our storage unit with a new lock. On Sunday morning he was in the same blue truck waiting at the gates for the storage unit to open. The owner was there to unlock the gates. The suspect went to his own storage unit, loaded up our stuff in his truck and drove off with it. On the camera we identified several objects in the back of his truck that are ours.

Owner remembers this interaction and was not suspicious of it because he recognized Suspect as the son of a woman who rents the storage unit from him.

Owner gave the police the name and address of the woman. I was in the room during this exchange.

So basically, Suspect was taking stuff from our storage unit, putting it in his family's storage unit, and then loading our stuff from his unit to his truck and driving off with it. He made several trips like this, all within the course of a few days. Based on the recorded time of the footage, we actually just missed passing him making a trip by hours. So it was all very recent.

So I had the name of the Mom (renter of theif's storage unit) and her address. I went on White Pages and found her son's name (Suspect) and address. I looked Suspect up on Facebook and found pictures of what he looks like. I went on Google Maps and found out what Mom's house looks like and what Suspect's apartment looks like. On Facebook, Suspect posted pictures that look to be taken in front of Mom's house and inside his own apartment.

I called the police department to try an add this information to my report, but the person taking down the information didn't want it.

    What can I do?

I have browsed a few pawn shops next to Suspect's address. We have been scouring Facebook Marketplace, craigslist and ebay for our high value electronics and furniture and nothing has come up. Where else would robbers sell stolen goods?

Suspect seems fairly well off (moreso than me and my bf who are barely above the poverty line) and this does not seem like methhead behavior typical of my town (Springfield, MO). It feels like it was planned out but I am not an expert in thievery.

Yes, we have renter's insurance who will cover much of what was stolen. But right now I'm thinking of personal items like the necklace my now estranged mother gave me, my grandmother's old sweatshirt, my favorite limited edition Starbucks mug or my framed senior year pictures. And I want to bring justice to the criminal.

TLDR: I have the name, address and pictures of the person who robbed my all of my belongings. It is a complete stranger to me. Police seem reluctant to help.

[Update] Public Lewdness at Place of Employment

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Original Post Here (I used the share button on mobile)

Location: Virginia I am using the mobile app.

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone for the help. I would like to update everyone on what has transpired. You all are great!

New information learned about the occurrence, from my wife: 1. Apparently the offender has been making inappropriate remarks for a while, the exact number of weeks is unknown. These include insisting she go home with him, divorce, and other verbal advances. 2. The offender (man who exposed himself) happened to approach her outside of work and insisted on paying for groceries. 3. The regular customer usually comes in during the slowest hours (we speculate purposely).

I decided to take up some of the wonderful advice given. She did give a police report, even though she didn't get a name nor had evidence. The offender only pays in cash, so no credit card records are available. Here is the advice from the police: 1. If the offender returns, call the police immediately so they can identify the offender. She was also advised to take pictures if able. 2. Once they have his information, she can apply for a restraining order. The police officers said the gravity of the situation would allow her to be eligible for the longest period the city will provide (2 years). 3. Even if the employer does not wish to ban the offender, the offender would not be allowed near her by the restraining order.

Thanks to your advice, we now have documentation.

To clarify, her employer gave the authority originally to the location manager to handle the situation. That manager did not want to ban the offender. So I took the advice and contacted an employment attorney. Here is the advice I was given: 1. Follow through with the police recommendations. 2. Right now it is a big grey area, as she does have the right for a harassment free workplace, the offender also has rights. 3. If the employer fires my wife for talking with the police, then we need to call the lawyer back.

As for the employer, the situation has been elevated to the owner. The owner is now aware fully of the situation and intends to ban the offending customer. It was elevated because I made phone calls to mutual contacts and informed them of the situation. This caught the owner's attention.

My wife and I will keep the attorney information on hand just in case. And my wife plans on following through with the advice.

    Thank you all so much!

    Autistic adult kills grandfather

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I am associated with an autistic adult, who recently has been placed in jail for killing a maternal relative (this is in California). This relative had a history of physically abusing members of his family, including the autistic adult. The autistic individual has never exhibited aggressive behavior like this, and was likely feeling threatened, or could have possibly reached a breaking point from the abuse he's dealt with over the years. From a criminal justice POV, I'm looking for what the likely outlook for this individual would be, seeing that he's on the spectrum, and has witnessed and suffered a lifetime of abuse from the relative he killed.

Bonus points if anyone knows of an advocacy group for autistic people in situations like this, as he's unlikely to be able to navigate the system on his own.

Landlord removed Amenities from Lease Renewal because the Neighbor wants to use them

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 01:28 PM PDT

Located in New York City, New York.

So I am in the process of renewing my lease for October 1 start date. While looking over the lease, I see that they removed Backyard and Driveway access. The landlord does not live in New York, but his apparent cousin does live next door. We do give the check to her, which the owner said was fine. We've also had problems in the past because she decided to removed all the grass from our backyard to plant her own stuff. When I noticed this, I told her that the backyard is included with our lease. And she got upset, and talked to the owner and wanted to see the lease to see if it was true. She was pretty far along with her process of doing whatever to the backyard, so my roommate and I decided that she can do it, as long as she lets us know in advance.

My roommate of course decided to tell the neighbor that the owner didn't include the backyard and driveway in the lease. And the neighbor said that she told him to remove it from the lease.

Can the neighbor even do that if she isn't on the lease or even a party on the lease?

I've been living here for under 1 year, so I know that the landlords are required to notify tenants 30 days in advance if they intend to raise the rent more than 5% or if they do not intend to renew the lease. He didn't contact us at all on Sept 1 so I contacted him the next day, Sept 2nd.

If the landlords removed certain amenities, wouldn't he have to disclose that and tell us about it? Would that even be renewing the lease? Because that would just be a new lease all together, right? Also, since it's less than 30 days than before the lease is up, what are my options? He can't say that he doesn't plan to renew the lease, and we can't say that we want to move out because we need to give notice as well.

Fiancee's grandma died slow painful death after hospital visit ignored fracture that caused sepsis

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:11 PM PDT

Her grandma was nearly 100 living in Michigan. She had a bad fall a month ago. After being "treated" she was sent to OT and told to regain use of her leg. Her OT kicked her out after about a week because her insurance wouldn't let her stay, and she was still in severe pain. 4 days after being in an assisted living facility, she was rushed to the ER at a different hospital in septic shock. They found out that she had a very fractured knee that was the source of the infection. She was transferred to another hospital to have a surgery to flush it out. There, they did some digging, and found out the initial ER visit post-fall hadn't just not checked to see if she was injured further, they had record of it but ignored it and sent her to OT regardless. Unsure still if OT knew about the fracture but presumably not since they were forcing her to put weight on it. They also of course didn't tell the family or they would have addressed it. Her daughter/fiancee's mom was POA and doing everything and fiancee was there when she got the call from the surgeon about the fracture records.

She survived that surgery and the sepsis but later caught pneumonia, and because of the whole ordeal she died slowly, drugged-up, in pain over the course of several weeks. She had liked the assisted living place and apparently referred to it as "home" already, and they were sad she wasn't coming back. Fiancee's family is really broken up.

She had other health issues and had refused to live in assisted living for a long time out of stubbornness so the fall was unavoidable, but she should have been able to live at least through the year since she was mentally-sound if the first place had treated her properly. Do they have any legal course of action? Did they decide not to treat her because of her age and pre-existing conditions?

Mom's life insurance apparently payed out without me receiving my half.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:51 PM PDT

I will try my best to keep this short. I'm sorry if this isn't a proper question, but I'm feeling very anxious and generally distraught right now. So I'm hoping to get some idea of what this process is going to be like. My mother passed away back in June of 2019. (Breast cancer, brain metastasis) She had two life insurance policies which were to my understanding supposed to pay out half to my step-father at the time, and half to me. Until very recently I had been lead to believe by him that they never payed out, and in my and my immediate family's grief we kind of accepted this. Recently however it came to light that both policies apparently payed out, and well considering my step-father's moving out and taking of a new wife within six months of her passing; It seems feasible that he got the money and well ran I guess.

Or at least got his half and then withheld any information that came in the mail for me that would have allowed me to claim my portion too. I know talking to a Lawyer is my absolute best bet in pursuing this matter and I plan too after the holiday weekend. (United States btw) Right now though I'm just... feeling horribly anxious and distraught as it feels like everything around her passing is up in the air again, and I hate it. I'm simply looking for an idea of what this entire process might be like if I have to go after him legally for my share of the policy, or if such a thing is even still possible at this point. Any advice is truly appreciated, and if I've somehow posted something that isn't in the spirit of this sub, then I am terribly sorry; I'm probably not doing my best thinking right now.

Specialist called my mother regarding my (25F) appointment

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 07:08 AM PDT

I had an appointment to see a specialist through the hospital I go to. They called and I could not return their call immediately so they called my mother about my appointment confirmation and cancelled my appointment through her.

When I called to clear it up, she said she called my physicians office and she was my "second point of contact", which if i remember she is just an emergency contact. I did NOT submit any paperwork to the specialist to call my mother. I am on her insurance policy if that clears it up. Is this a HIPAA violation? When I worked in medical care we could not confirm appointments with anyone else besides the patient/ legal guardian unless otherwise stated. Located in Ohio.

••Edit: filed through Dept. of Health and Human Services. I ended up calling my physicians office after I filed and she said she did not give her the information, she (specialists office manager) looked it up and called her to confirm it. Physicians office was really nice and made sure their info was correct. I've seen them for 5 years and they've never called my mother and they're the ones who have her listed on paperwork. Patient advocate at the facility said this isn't their first complaint but since they're private practice they have no jurisdiction but noted my complaint.

My mom called me back and told me she isn't even a patient at that office, she sees his brother at a different location. So double whammy, hopefully Monday i can add an addendum.

Thank you everyone for the reassurance. I don't have money for a lawyer and don't mind my mom knowing but it doesn't make it okay regardless. I was livid and eventually calmed down and worried i flew off the handle.

Employer deducting my entire paycheck to sublease his apartment out under co. name tax break and unfair cheap laborers

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:35 PM PDT

My Employer met me while I was unemployed and living in my car desperately trying to figure something out. He was manipulative and fast talking, quick to get me living in his old apartment and subleasing it to me by working with him "full time" and assuring me that I'd be able to afford the rent and then some. I have been working for his company for 3 weeks getting no more than 15hrs @ minimum wage and had every dime paying off August's rent for $650. This company has me on their actual payroll illegally deducting everything leftover after taxes which prevents me from being able to collect. Without any written or signed rental agreement this can't be something that I'm obligated to but I am also uneducated in this department to be able to approach him. his inability to increase my hours pay or reduce the amount for rent I am left more crippled than I once was. My entire paycheck is voided and deducted from the monthly rent and I am unable to make anything over this amount. I am not the first employee to live here and get offered a similar deal. Needless to say he's no longer with the company and had to find other living arrangements. I need legal help and someone to explain to me what actions I can take to help make this work between my employer and I so that I am able to move forward and agree on more realistic terms. Please notify me with any information on laws and regulations regarding this issue! Thank you.

Paternity test in the mail from an ex over 13 years ago. She has tested multiple men that have not been the father and there is no way I am. Are there any legal repercussions of not taking it?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:00 AM PDT

I'll try and keep this short. I'm writing this for my SO with my account. Located in North Carolina. I noticed an envelope from DSS in a stack of mail from my PO box I check less often than I should, and when I opened it there was a letter for a paternity test for a child. I missed the initial date but called them back to see who they were looking for (I am the III in the family and the letter was just addressed to my full name. My dad passed 2 years ago and legal mistakes have been made in the past due to this) they confirmed I was who it was addressed to. The letter is for child support. They told me DSS had become involved with the child, and there had been multiple men tested but none were the father. They want me to take a brief period off work during the week and come in, pay $25, bring an ID and answer questions and confirm I am not involved. While I'd usually be happy to do this money and time with Covid are tight, and I know I've not seen her since her oldest child was born. IF I am thinking of the correct ex, which is the only one that fits the description of having kids and the possibility of multiple fathers/DSS involvement.

Tldr; ex is trying to have me take a paternity test for a child I know is not mine. Are there legal repercussions for me not showing up for said test?

My mom forged my information and signed a 25 year contract

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:11 PM PDT

A little bit of backstory- my (24f) mom purchased a house outright and registered everything under my name. However, my mom lives in the house and pays all utilities, taxes and expenses. She just signed a 25 year solar panel contract without even consulting me. I found out one day because she called me while they were at the house doing the installation and she wouldn't even tell me the name of the company. I'm honestly baffled at how they obtained permits under my name and completed the install without even verifying who owned the house?

I'm all for going green but she went with literally the first company that did a consult. We live in a snowy area, so I brought up questions about maintenance in the winter and in general, roof repairs/ replacement and she has no clue about anything because she didn't think to ask. Our house is super old and will absolutely require a new roof soon and from my understanding- a lot of solar companies will replace the roof as a courtesy. My mom is disabled and honestly won't be around another 25 years. She also isn't mentally sound and I, for good reason, believe that she cannot be making these decisions on her own.

I have to call their customer service department next week and have them send me all of the paperwork/ documents they have. I honestly don't know what to do though.. I have a really bad feeling that I'm going to get screwed on whatever contract she signed without my permission.

    Edit: typo

[CA] Landlord assessed <$50 of damage before move out, now withholding $2,100 from security deposit for exorbitant cleaning fees

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:46 AM PDT

My roommates and I received a move out inspection 4 days before our lease ended, and the inspector informed us that so long as we cleaned up, we'd only be charged ~$30-40 for some mild paint chipping. The place was spotless when we moved out, but we were refunded only $2,400 of our $4,500 security deposit, and charges listed were $55 for "Hauling Bulky Items and Trash from the Common Area of the Building" (we left nothing behind), $420 for "Base Cleaning Common Areas," $1,500 for "Bedrooms, Base Cleaning 2 Bathrooms Paint Common Area, 4 Bedroom, 2 Bathrooms, and Base Molding" (this is unclear, also how can painting and cleaning be that expensive?), and $130 for "Unclogged, Repaired 2 Bathroom's Shower and Sink" (I unclogged every drain with a drain snake the day we moved out).

Is this bullshit? We have some pictures as well as a copy of the inspector's assessment. Do we have any recourse?

[CA] I got rear-ended. My car is totaled. Other driver's insurance will only pay out up to $5000. Please help.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:17 PM PDT

Hi LA, I hope someone can give me some guidance. Location is California, USA - not Canada. My apologies if it was unclear.

    Here's what happened:

Last Thursday night, I was driving with my partner in my passenger's seat. We stopped at a red light and were fully stopped for at least ten seconds or so. It wasn't a case where the light changed and we had to stop. It was red as we approached. I don't know if this is relevant; I'm just trying to give the full situation. While we were sitting at the red light, a car came up behind us and rear-ended my car at a speed of approximately 45mph. No police report was filed but I suspect he may have been intoxicated.

Upon picking up the car from the tow lot, I realized just how bad it had been. I hoped I was imagining it as a worse incident than it was, but it was really bad. The car is absolutely totaled and the fact that my SO and I only walked away with some whiplash, soreness, and a bruise or two is astonishing.

The cop at the scene said it was "unquestionably [the other driver's] fault." I spoke with my insurance and spoke with his insurance. As of right now, they are still "pending liability," which is bonkers to me because he fucking rear-ended me at a stoplight but whatever.

The issue is that his insurance will only cover up to $5000 of property damage and I only have liability insurance (when I got the car and insured it, I was on a very tight budget). But because he was technically insured (even with the bare minimum for this state), it doesn't fall under uninsured motorist coverage or underinsured motorist coverage.

I checked Kelley Blue Book and I spoke to a nearby dealer to see what my car would have hypothetically sold for before the accident. My car's value has been approximated by both of those sources to be around $16k-$17k (it's a pretty new Honda Civic EX with less than 50k miles).

So right now, I'm sitting with a totaled car, for which the maximum insurance will give me is less than a third of its value. I have not officially been offered anything by the other party's insurance as they are still determining whether or not it might have not been his fault. But, it has been made clear to me that no matter what, they would not offer more than $5000.

I don't really know what to do at this point. Do I sue? Should I sue? I'm not sure the other party has any assets or ability to pay, and I don't know how long it would take or what would be involved. I know I should have figured out a way to have comprehensive or collision so please don't drag me too hard for that. I just don't know where to go from here.

    Thanks in advance.

Got a concussion by a bully cant file charges

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 10:28 AM PDT

Im in 10th grade one of my bullies pushed me into a wall and i got a concussion from it and now my head hurts so bad my vision gets blurry i cant focus well or balance and im forgetting stuff. My mom tried filing assault charges but the school just called my mom and said because its on school grounds we cant file assault charges. the best they can do is make sure i wont see him in class. What do i do? is this even possible? I have a concussion and he gets next to no consequences. this is in texas btw

Edit: my sister had his snap he said oh well to giving me the concussion and his reasoning for it and this is copied and pasted was "he just robbed me for $20! we were in the car together and i realized i was missing my $20 and i just knew it was him" I in no way ever touched his money, what is the max i can do to him? is suing for injury possible? I was unable to go to school today due to my concussion and they sent me home

Edit 2: My mom says she tried contacting the local police and the sro officer and they both say theres no way i can press charges, i feel so helpless the only thing thats going to happen to him is he'll get in trouble in school and be completely fine outside of school his parents wont give a shit. They say cause its on school property they cant do anything.

Edit 3: Me and my dad went to the police station to see what I could do about everything and see if it was even legal if the school could tell me I cant file charges, They said the school had every right to say i can not file charges and that they can't do anything for me cause it was on school grounds and we're both minors. They also said because there is no bruising or anything visible I can not do anything even though I have a concussion. They said after i get evaluated by a doctor, we probably couldn't even get them to pay medical bills. The legal system is so fucked up and its so terrifying that I can't even do anything about it. Im suffering all day with horrible headaches and dizziness and things get blurry if i try to focus on something, and the most they can do is just make sure i wont see him in school. im 100% out of options and I just now have to go to school every day worrying if somethings going to happen to me, what if this time it gets way more serious and I end up having brain damage or broken bones. My sister has been texting him and he said "oh well" to giving me a concussion and my sister was telling him if he keeps doing this stuff then we'll be fighting back next time (which i know she shouldn't say but I had no control over what she said to him as i found out after) and he said word for word "I dont fight I shoot". so now im worrying about if Im going to end up getting killed at school or if im going to get followed home and get jumped or killed.
