Posted: 13 May 2020 08:58 PM PDT My original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/ggtnwp/neighbors_entrusted_me_with_looking_after_their/ Good news, i followed everyone's advice reached out to the police and the embassy. Explained the situation, and gave them a bunch of information. Tonight i got a phone call from them, explaining they just decided to stay much much longer and spend time with family/friends. They apparently asked his wife's brother to come and collect the animals and get the key a long time ago back in August, but never followed up on it. He apologized and said he was sorry, he gave me two options, and asked if i wanted to keep his pets since i have had them for so long, or he will push his step brother to get the animals. Apparently the animals don't really mean anything to him or his wife which i feel is quite shitty. He apparently can no longer access his email, and passed me along a new email address/phone number i can use to contact him. But told me he doesn't have plans to return to Canada anytime soon. I mentioned the water damage, and he just said they can buy a new house or get it fixed when they get back. He was also quite confused and somewhat annoyed, about the lengths we went to get in touch with him. He didn't understand why we reached out the embassy. He then offered to send me a bunch of money to square away the inconvenience, and that was more or less it. I don't know if it is a cultural thing, however i feel kind of pissed off at how little he/his wife seem to care about the pets/his house. Anyways me and my wife are going to keep the pets simply because well i don't think ether of us can part with the dogs and his cat at this point. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 08:03 AM PDT So I'm not really sure what to do here. I am still paying on the lease on a private bd/ba in 4 bedroom apartment, despite not regularly living there since March. I did not officially move out, much of my stuff is still there, but I have only been there a handful of times since the quarantine. Thing is, the apartment itself is a pet-free unit, and furthermore, I have a severe anaphylaxis-level allergy to cats. All of my roommates were well aware of this. However, one of my roommates had her birthday at the end of April and got a cat, which she hides from the landlord. She did not tell her other roommates (who are still living there) beforehand, and she only she finally told me about it last week. While I wasn't happy about it, I was like whatever since I wasn't regularly living there. Last week though, I realized that I needed to get my summer clothes from my apartment as it is getting hot, and I only had my fall clothes at my parents house. I took an allergy pill and went to the apartment. I was only there for 15 minutes, not touching anything except stuff in my locked room, and I still had a massive allergy attack. I had to use my emergency inhaler and everything. The attack lasted for hours and nearly put me in the hospital. She didn't tell me about the cat for 2 weeks after getting it, so if I had gone there unknowingly and without taking allergy medicine beforehand, she could have legitimately killed me. I do not carry epi pens since being in an enclosed space with a cat is usually a very easy situation to avoid (I ask everybody about it before going to their house or moving in with them etc), and my doctor does not recommend it for this purpose. I am now pretty upset since she has effectively blocked me off from my apartment, which I am still paying for until the end of July, with her illegal cat. I had plans to still go there sometimes to get away from my parents, or to use the amenities (pool, gym, ect), but now I basically can't. I would have at least liked the option. When I asked her if she could have waited to adopt the cat until June (she moves out the first), she got upset with me and said that the cat has helped her through the quarantine. Even after she moves out, I still wouldn't be able to go over there because of lingering cat hair/dander (even if deep cleaned). I've gotten sick from being in houses that haven't had cats in years. I talked to my leasing office, and due to little things in the lease contract (apparently), they can't let me out of my lease, and all they can do is give her a lease violation and offer me the option of moving to another 4bd apartment in the property. I would rather be compensated for the loss of MY apartment, and not be moved to a random new unit with random people I don't know for the last few months of my lease (and I have requirements such as they must be all female, must be on the first floor (am handicapped), and must not have cats, so I'm not even sure if a match could be found that fits this criteria). I want to ask her for the $1500 worth of rent, but if she refuses to compensate me, would I have any legal basis to sue her for it? Would it even be worth it for such an amount? UPDATE: Here's an update since this morning. The landlord called me this morning and gave me some options. She sent the roommate a lease violation with a fine and an order to remove the cat within 48hrs and to deep clean the apartment. The Landlord will not let me out of my lease since it can be "reasonably amended" instead by putting me in another 4bd apartment (with random people I don't know but oh well) if they can find one. I would rather get out of my lease altogether but it may not be possible. This is in Texas. CLARIFICATION: Some people are going through my post history and seeing that I have 2 dogs and a bird as pets (all at my parents' house, never at the apartment.) They're making stupid claims like "you are only allergic to one specific animal??" etc. And "she is an asshole! She has other animals!" In case y'all didn't know, you can't pick and choose your allergies lol, and just because you are allergic to one animal doesn't mean you are allergic to ALL animals. Good grief [link] [comments] |
(VA) - I saved a dog's life and now the owner is threatening to sue me. Posted: 13 May 2020 06:36 PM PDT Quick backstory. I work with animals for a living. I've trained in pet first-aid and cpr. I was out for a jog and heard a woman scream. Ran over, and saw her freaking out over a seemingly lifeless dog. Instincts kicked in. I checked on the dog. Unresponsive and not breathing. I preformed cpr, resuscitated the dog, and went with the woman to the vet in case he needed to be resuscitated again along the way. Thankfully, the dog lived. Not sure what the issue was, as once the vet said the dog was stable she drove me home and I assume she went back alone and heard all the details. On the car ride home she was so thankful and was crying and kept telling me I was a saint and all that jazz. Well, she asked around the neighborhood for me and someone told her where I lived. She came and knocked a few days ago and asked me how I was going to pay for the broken ribs, check or cash. I had no idea what she was talking about, and she explained that I had broken two ribs while performing cpr, and that she expected me to pay for it. She said the state of VA sees dogs as property, and that I damaged her property, so I was responsible for the cost of fixing it. I'll avoid describing the anger and all that I felt. What I want to know is am I legally at fault for the damage to her dog? I did break the ribs, but that is common in cpr on dogs. As far as I know, the dog wasn't breathing, I stepped in and got him breathing again. I saved the dog's life. Does that protect me from any damage I might have caused? I know the general advice here is that the threat of being sued and actually being sued are totally different. She hasn't actually served me with papers or anything like that. I'm just wondering, if she persists with this nonsense, could I be held liable? Would I have to cover the vet costs for the broken ribs? Thanks in advance for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 05:03 PM PDT USA - Wisconsin Long story short, I rent a duplex and the neighbor had a house fire in December 2019. In January, a construction company came in and soda blasted the walls to remove soot and ash. In the process, my side of the duplex was damaged since they didn't prep the area before beginning work. The construction company owner came out to look at the damage and refused to pay for cleanup. I obtained estimates from 3 different companies to clean both my contents and the structure and their estimates ranged from $2000 to $3500. I also incurred some vet bills, my cats became incredibly sick after the incident and I spent hundreds of dollars on their care. I filed a small claims suit against the construction company. Due to covid the case was pushed back twice and was ultimately held via a zoom meeting. During the meeting the commissioner in charge of the hearing said the following: Commissioner: "It looks like you're suing them over a pet or something?" Me: "it's mostly for property damage, but also my pets." Commissioner: "Got it. I skimmed your case. Construction company, do you disagree with this claim?" Construction guy: "Yes I do" Commissioner: "Okay. I'm sending this matter to mediation. Call this number and make an appointment within the next 7 days" I had 3 copies of pictures, receipts, documents, vet bills, and everything else I thought I would need. I had my case all planned out. I spoke with two lawyers prior to this hearing who both said my case is a slam dunk - the contractor is guilty of negligence resulting in damages. I even have an email from my renters insurance saying the damages aren't covered since it's not a result of the fire. And the commissioner dismissed it without hearing my side because he "skimmed my case". I didn't get to present any of my evidence. Frankly, I feel cheated. Mediation is scheduled for tomorrow, and I don't feel confident that we will reach an agreement. What recourse do I have if things don't happen in my favor? Posted: 13 May 2020 11:04 AM PDT My mother has been living by herself in a elderly retirement community type of apartment. I am usually over there every other day but have not been able to see her for 3 months because of covid19 restrictions. She has memory problems that are only getting worse, she calls me 10x+ times a day asking what's going on, and she can't remember to take take her medicine. I have arranged for her to move into a new home with us next month. Now her apartment community is telling me they will not allow movers in. I told them I need to have her moved out by July 1st. The date the new lease starts. I can't afford to pay both the new lease and the rent at this community apartment. What can I do if they will not allow us to move her out? Will we still have to pay rent there if they will not let us move her stuff out? How could she live with us without any of her clothes, bed, ect.? What can I do? This is in Kansas City, Missouri. Posted: 13 May 2020 02:27 PM PDT This happened about a year and a half ago and I hate to admit it, but it still really bothers me. Regardless, the premise is, we were both minors (and are still both minors) that exchanged nudes while we were dating, meaning we were both technically in possession of child pornography. What he did was take my nudes to this app called Yubo and assumed my identity (aka he posed as a lesbian) using his mother's phone, because his was lost at the time. The only reason I found out is because one of the girls he was texting through Yubo messaged me on Instagram (because the username he used for the account was the same as my Instagram username) and asked me if I was the person she was texting. Obviously, it was not, and I asked her what was going on. She sent me screenshots of the account that was using my photos and told me that she had been texting someone whom she THOUGHT was me, but sensed some fishy activity because they said they did not have any other forms of social media, so she looked "me" up. The only person who had my personal photos was my boyfriend at the time, and he told me this password that he used for ALL accounts, so I typed in the username the girl showed me and the password he told me he used for everything, and successfully logged into the account. I went through all of the messages between him and other girls and found that he told what school we both went to, he combined both of our hobbies, he even adopted my racial stereotypes and used jokes that I've made with him before. Most importantly, I found a phone number that the owner of the account gave to someone to send videos (because you could not send videos on the app), and I looked up the phone number in my contacts list and it was my boyfriend's mother's phone number. The whole situation messed with my head and I confided in some friends who went and told the school administration, which led to a student court date, where he was served a three month suspension. Other wise, no other legal repercussions took place. I currently still have access to the same account that he used, I have screenshots of previous chats that could be called "incriminating", I still have the whole conversation between me and that very girl on Instagram. All in all, I'm wondering what can be done about this situation; can I sue on the basis of defamation of character? On the basis of emotional trauma? Any advice that would let me know about the possibilities would be greatly appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 06:53 PM PDT As my lengthy title says, I am a children's author of a book series written to help kids with a certain disability. For the sake of discretion, lets call the first book "Amazing Kids" and the sequel "Amazing People". In reality, both titles are more specific and not easy to copy accidentally. My books were published in 2016 and 2017. I have not previously registered a trademark or copyright for the titles of my books. I have just been notified that an organization called the equivalent of "Amazing Kids Foundation" has been created and registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and that they are not only within the same community for the same type of disability, but they also list "Amazing People" on their website's Resources page and intentionally do not list the first book, "Amazing Kids". So they absolutely know my books exist and that they stole the name from me. This organization just came into existence a few months ago, my books were published years ago, and they are aware they stole the name. Do I have any case for trademark infringement here? I'm in Virginia, USA. [link] [comments] |
Apartment is unlivable. What actions can I take? Posted: 13 May 2020 05:56 PM PDT [TEXAS] My roommates bathroom ceiling started to leak last week. We called the office and left voicemail explaining our situation and submitted a formal request last week. It's been leaking now for days and no one has came. We called the emergency number several times and still cannot get in touch with anyone. Today it went from a few drops to leaking bucket fulls. We unscrewed the ceiling tile and tons of water with black specks came out leaving inches of water and soaking our carpet. It smelled foul. The inside pipes were rusted out, covered in mold and brown sludge and and there was exposed wire. We're at a loss. We are trying to call code compliance but they are closed till 7 am tomorrow. I have a feeling this will be an expensive repair and they've proven they aren't reliable in the past with others matters. What are our rights? Can we take legal action for them not responding to an emergency? What about the mold? This is my first time living alone so I'm sorry if I sound ignorant. Thanks in advanced. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 May 2020 12:33 PM PDT I understand that there's a worldwide pandemic going on, but, I'm not sure if, I'm out of luck as far as not having access to hot/warm water/lukewarm goes. Note: the provincial state of emergency in Ontario has been extended to June 2nd, so all non-essential services have been suspended until then - even if there's a habitability issue here, I likely wouldn't have any recourse until the state of emergency is lifted. I could always boil water, and use a bucket to bathe, I guess. [link] [comments] |
My boss fired me without telling me I was fired, and now is fighting my unemployment claim (NC) Posted: 13 May 2020 06:05 PM PDT I just recieved a letter from the unemployment office that my previous employeer is contesting my unemployment claim due to having been fired with cause for missed shifts. However, I was never told that I was fired (I just now learned it from the unemployment office), and the shifts that I missed occured immediately following the quarantine procedures in my state (NC) requiring resturaunts to only do take-out. My boss told me not to come in the night before the closures started, and so I did not come in for any of the shifts that I had previously been told to come in for later that week, assuming that I would be told if the resturaunt would stay open during the executive order given that they were closing the night before. I am now being told that my unemployment is being disputed for missing shifts, which I can only assume were those. However, my boss has always called if I'm even two minutes late, and has a long history of calling employees immediately when they are late, let alone miss mulitple shifts. I never recieved any contact from him inquiring about the missed shifts, nor informing me that I had been terminated. After missing these shifts (which I didn't realize I had missed), I told him I was filing for unemployment due to not being scheduled during the caronavirus, and he responded by giving me information I needed for the aplication, never mentioning that I had in fact been fired, or even that they were open. Does he have a claim for protesting my unemployment benefits? Was I even terminated if I wasn't informed? [link] [comments] |
I believe my parents are illegally using my name and credit to buy things Posted: 13 May 2020 02:21 AM PDT Ok Reddit, let me just say this before I ask my question. Consider it backstory. I moved out of my parent's house (dump) in 2018, and cut contact as I did so. I refuse to be part of their lives, or let them be part of mine because of things they've done to me in the past. Just one single example is my stepfather acquiring a gun (in my name since he has a felony) (he also forged my signature for this) and pointing it at me twice, even so far as shooting at my car the second time. I have TRILLIONS of reasons to get away from those psychopaths, but that's not why I'm here. I'm here because my current, AND ONLY CAR EVER OWNED, is getting really old, it's a 2010 Ford Focus. So some friends and I decided to look at cheaper insurance and newer, but still pre-owned, cars. When getting a quote for the insurance, Nationwide pulled up a car (not sure what kind, I don't really know my vehicles and it wasn't a kind I'd heard before) that is currently registered in my name. I know this was my family, and I know they've forged my signature for it. I've also noticed lately that my credit score had been very slowly decreasing as well (Redstone Federal Credit Union app FICO score). What can I do to get this looked into, and how do I do it? I don't even know where to begin on this. I honestly think they've used their "legal guardian" bs to get a copy of my social security card, and have possibly pulled loans in my name, loans that are draining my credit score, and killing my credibility. What do I do? I live in Alabama, and last I heard they did too. Edit: Ok, everyone is stuck on the gun thing, so I'll clarify on that. That was in 2017, about October I think (I moved out after pulling a few loans for downpayment and security on an approved apartment almost a full year later, September). The gun was bought from his cousin, who no longer owns the pawn he got it from. My stepdad wasn't the only person not ID'd for a firearm and he was reported. After i did all i could to report the weapon to save myself, he destroyed all evidence he could and got rid of the gun. It was never legally registered to begin with, so without any proof or leads, it was dropped. And for the few who wanted to know, yes I was in the vehicle, but no, i didn't get hurt and my car wasn't hit. I stayed with a friend for about a week before she got too scared to let me stay there. (WA) Host not giving back agreed-upon amount after cancellation Posted: 13 May 2020 12:17 PM PDT About a month ago, my roommate and I (from a different state) booked a property in Seattle, Washington listing on a platform similar to Airbnb, but we had to cancel after one week. The landlord explicitly told us (via this messaging platform and we have proof of it) that he would refund a certain amount of money if we cancelled. However, 5 weeks later, the landlord has still not refunded us the money and took 19 days to respond to our repeated messages. He finally responded when we filed a complaint with the BBB, informed him of our potential legal suit, and reminded him of his contractual obligation. The total dollar amount he owes us is more than $1k. We have already informed him that failure to refund us as agreed upon in the contract means that we will pursue legal action. If we do end up having to go through with this, what are the next best steps? Does anyone have any idea whether our case is winnable in small claims court in King County? (We have all the evidence and myriads of emails, communication with support staff of that platform who are on our side, all chats on the messaging platform, etc.) [link] [comments] |
Debt Collection Agency Won't Accept My Payment -- Even in Full. Posted: 13 May 2020 09:33 PM PDT Hi all, first time poster here. I'd be very appreciative of any advice, or any direction to other reddit threads that this would better fit in. So, I'm trying to work on my credit and noticed I had some things in collection. I called all of the collection agencies today and paid them off in full, except for one collection Agency, Credit Collection Services located in Norwood, MA. They literally wouldn't let me make a payment, because they're "not allowed to service my account due to the corona virus." They wouldn't even give me any information regarding my account, stating that they "literally can't service my account" or tell me when I'd be able to. They said I could mail in a payment but that they don't know when it would be processed or call again at a future date, again stating that they can't service my account. It was super frustrating, as I'm trying to take care of my credit so I can rent a house. Any information is appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 03:54 PM PDT I'm 25. My hospital keeps calling my dad asking me to schedule an appointment. It's for the psychiatric office. I have told them multiple times I do not want them to call my parents about these appointments and they still do. I'm wondering if it's a potential HIPPA violation? It's embarrassing to keep having them call my dad when they know my phone number. [link] [comments] |
Customer is bathing "ADA Service Dog" in communal showers. Do I have to allow this? Posted: 13 May 2020 05:19 PM PDT Location: Georgia, USA We operate a large community with up to 500+ people. We have 3 bath houses with a combined 12 showers. We of course often have people who represent their dogs as service animals. I have no proof their are lying but it's pretty obvious most of the time in my eyes. Lately we have a customer that is taking their "service dog" into the bathrooms and using the shower to wash it. Of course they aren't cleaning up appropriately after themselves which is how I became aware of the situation. I would like to make signs that say, while service dogs are welcome, they are not to be bathed in the showers and direct them to a hose outside where they can wash their dog. Long dog hair causes all kinds of plumbing problems, not to mention wet dog smell all over the bathroom after the dogs shakes dry. What are my options here? I don't want to get sued. Verizon has been unable to refund the money they falsely took Posted: 13 May 2020 08:54 PM PDT Hello, hope everyone is safe. Back story: On January 29th of this year I set up a home internet connection at my mom's apartment as a token of help and gratitude. I made a deposit of exactly $250 including technician installation, modem price, and service startup. The technician was supposed to arrive on January 31st between the time of 9 AM to 4 PM. My mother took off a day from work so she could be there, but he never appeared. I called the company on 1st Feb informing them I paid them money for the technician but he never appeared. They reset the date for Feb 6th during the same time frame and he did install everything and left. Real problem began when I had $211.41 taken out of my bank account on Feb 20. Spent hours trying to dispute these charges and got nowhere. The first agent I talked to blamed it on me saying $99 will be taken out every month along with the internet bill ($80) as the $99 is the charge for the modem even though the modem actually cost $40 that we made a one time payment for. Second agent said "Your technician appeared" over and over again and then passed me onto the third agent after I told the second agent to give up his job because he can't understand what I'm talking about. Third agent was on the same "no we did not charge you" bs so I told him to cancel my services in which he immediately retaliated with a "I'm sorry let me refund it back". Told them I want to cancel my service and want both a refund on my charge and my deposit back. Got a phone number to call and a very absent minded agent was there. Gave her my account information and whatever she asked only to be told that my account was already cancelled. I was infuriated because after being charged they tell me my account was cancelled. After 30 minutes of trying to find my account with her I asked for a supervisor and she finally managed to maybe get my account or got scared I don't know. She gave me a confirmation number for cancellation and told me that my refund for both the charge and deposit will be returned within 2 months. It's May 13th and instead of a refund I find another charge of $45.62 on April 15th. I talked to an agent that said the charge won't go through but it did and I got another charge on May 8th that said "$(201.07), No Payment Due". I had my card removed in February during the entire fiasco and yet somehow they still keep charging me when I got my account cancelled. They owe me all the money back as during signing up they said the deposit is returned within a year automatically. They charged me again for their technician not showing up, they charged me twice now for bills that weren't even the amount of the internet service I had signed up for. I don't know what to do because I'm losing my money to them and they're worthless when it comes to helping. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 04:26 PM PDT This might also be suited for /r/relationships but I'm looking for legal options. TLDR; share inherited property with my sister, she blocks my attempts to maintain property and share expenses. My estate attorney says we have "work it out between us" but we can't communicate. Is there any legal process to propose she buy me out? Do I have other options I'm not aware of? More detail: My mom died a few years ago and my dad died last year. There was no will. Through probate, my older sister and I are now are both on the deed to my parents Florida house. The house has a decent amount of valuable possessions in it, as both my parents were collectors. My sister lives about 45 minutes away from the house, I live thousands of miles away in another state. My sister and I have never had a good relationship. She resented me being born and treated me badly growing up. She also has mental issues that can make her unreliable and disorganized, especially financially, and limit how much she can accomplish. But she can't acknowledge her limits or ask for help. She's kind of emotionally stunted. She presents as pretty normal socially, though, and has a good job. Since my dad died I have been handling all the estate paperwork. When we got our estate attorney (I found & paid for attorney), my sister refused to sign anything that made me the sole representative of the estate. She needed to be symbolically "in charge" because she is the oldest. So we are co-petitioners, and the whole estate process has been about walking on eggshells to protect her need to feel in control and in charge or else she would block the process. In reality I've had to handle almost everything, because it's outside of her capability. It means doing a dance where I give her the chance to handle something, wait for her to fail to do it, then handle whatever it is myself while making her think it was her idea to "let" me do it. The house has become a big problem. My sister says she wants to sell the house "eventually" but needs more time to go through everything. She has not been to check on the house in 6 months. She hasn't been able to do even the most basic cleaning. The fridge is still full of food from a year ago, and my sister seems to have created a shrine to my parents in the house. I am aware of what's going on because a neighbor is taking basic care of the house and updates me. I was planning to go clean the house out myself this spring, but I haven't been able to now because of the pandemic. I have suggested to her that we hire help, hire an estate sale service, or have the neighbor clean (they have offered). My sister insists that it's not necessary because she will go work on it soon, but then she doesn't. She won't admit or talk about whether there is any emotional or other reason why she isn't able to. This has been going on for nearly a year. I am covering the power bills and homeowners insurance on the house. My sister covers some other bills sporadically, but has to be nagged. She will not respond to my requests to document all our expenses so that we can keep track and evenly split the costs. She doesn't respond to other requests, such as to let the neighbor unplug appliances so that the power bill is lower. The neighbor won't do things without my sister's consent because she worries my sister will get angry (my sister has flown off the handle at neighbor before). What can I do here? Are my only options for dealing with this to have her buy me out or force a public sale of the house? Having her buy me out makes sense to me, and she can afford it, but I don't think she would respond well to the suggestion, especially coming from me. It also breaks my heart to imagine the house and our parents and childhood possessions being essentially abandoned without me there to manage the upkeep. But this situation has become stressful enough that I am willing to accept it. I asked our estate attorney if they could help me communicate to her about a proposed buyout, and they said we had to work it out ourselves because we're co petitioners. They said they could only do the transfer paperwork after we'd decided about the buyout. Is that right? Should I get my own individual attorney? Edited to add: Can I get an attorney to communicate with her since she doesn't take communications for me well? Or a mediator? She doesn't respond to email so I worry there's no way to get her to reply or participate in a legal proceeding. As part owner can I just hire people to go work on my behalf? Can I give power of attorney to the neighbor? Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 07:34 PM PDT I've (F23) been working at this company since March 2019. I graduated from college in the general business course for reference in September 2018. My coworker left on sick leave for two months in October 2019. This left me to manage in the office alone after only a few months of working there. I didn't receive all the training I needed as I had started in the busy season (it's agriculture). When my coworker left, I took on some of her responsibilities. There is another manager (M55) from another location who I also work for. I didn't receive proper training on some of the new tasks I was given. He pointed out every single mistake I made over text in a group chat with my boss instead of taking the time to explain what he was looking for. I was already stressed having to be in the office alone dealing with all the customers. He honestly made me feel stupid for making mistakes. This is where my confidence began to get chipped away and my anxiety really began. I started not being able to keep up with my work. I was asked if I would be interested in being an accounting assistant in December 2019. I said I would think about it as it involved me moving to the other location. In January after the holidays, my boss informed me late on a Friday that I would be moving to the other location as we had discussed. I had not agreed to this position, but I felt like I had to do what my boss asked. The office I was moved into was an absolute disaster. There was paperwork everywhere. We have several companies (15) that need filing and accounting done for them. Now I was expected to take on this as well. There was 2 years of unfiled paperwork in there. It wasn't set up for me to even work in there. I also was told to move the filing from the location I was previously at to this new location. This is a ton of work and they keep adding things they want me to do to my job. They want information entered in several different places and we get a ton of invoices for A/P. They ask for a ton of information for payroll- so much that it takes me 3 days to enter all the data for 50 employees. Every mistake I make is mentioned in the group chat with my boss before being brought to me and talked about. For the past few months, I have not been sleeping well. My chest hurts when I get up in the morning and I have had several panic attacks while at work. I don't feel supported and I don't feel like the expectations were fair. I have told my boss that I feel overwhelmed, but I think he just thinks I don't know how to manage my time properly. My manager takes every opportunity that he finds something I haven't gotten to yet, to bring it up to my boss. My coworkers also have the same anxiety around him. He sends work lists over text messages near the end of the day. He has basically bullied one of the other people I work with. When he gets upset about something, he gives the silent treatment. One of the other workers who worked with this manager had to take a week of stress leave because he couldn't handle how this manager does things. It was too stressful. Today he essentially told me I was incompetent. When I messaged him privately to say that I felt this kind of feedback was not helpful and that I could correct any mistakes if we worked together, he sent something back along the lines of... your mistake will show the boss what he needs to know. Then today, after work while I was job searching, I found a job posting for... my job. Like an exact description. This can only mean they are going to fire me. What do I even do? Do I have any rights in this situation? Is there a way to prepare? I don't make a lot of money, so I don't know how realistic getting a lawyer would be or if that would even help. I live in Ontario, Canada. [link] [comments] |
Dangerous Abusive Ex-boyfriend Posted: 13 May 2020 05:41 PM PDT Hi everyone. So a lot has been thrown my way the past few days and I am looking for some help for my friend / ex girlfriend. Recently she got out of a very abusive relationship. She was hospitalized with stitches around her eyes a year back and the worst one was when she was hospitalized after a broken back when he got physical with her (also about a year back). She was unable to work for almost a year after that. She has had continuous bruising around her body before and since those two incidents. When the incidents happened, she would make up an excuse and blamed it on natural accidents even though we all had our doubts. A month ago, she finally had the courage to leave and not go back and was able to open up to me and her parents about everything she was enduring for the past two years. The guy has always threatened her and has even now continuously been threatening her and her family. According to her, the guy has buried bodies before, gotten aggressive with his friends and choked them out, and has bragged about having hired contract killers, which his friends have confirmed. He is also a drug dealer and armed. My friend has been consistently having PTSD and breakdowns from everything that has happened. I am figuring out getting her a therapist as it is affecting her daily life (no sleep, work performance, etc). I also want her to get legal help and protection. She is afraid if we do pursue charges, the guy will post bail and get someone to attack her and her family. What would be the best course of action? Do we have a case even though its been over a year since the severe abuse incidences? Appreciate any feedback as I have no idea where to start. (Location is Virginia.) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2020 07:52 AM PDT We live in Arizona. My friend is filing for chapter 13. He has a side business of breeding animals. His advisor said to get rid of said business, since it is not making a profits. However, said animal is due to give birth soon and they wanted to sell the babies. They cannot do it in their name, per them, and would like me to screen people, take phone calls and things, under my name. Is this legal for me to do? What are possible consequences of this? Thank you for reading. [link] [comments] |
My parents claimed me as a dependent for 4 years despite me living on my own and paying my own way Posted: 13 May 2020 07:18 PM PDT [USA][MA] I've been a long time browser of this sub, but never imagined I'd be the one posting. I'm not even sure this is the right sub, because of the tax related nature of the question, but r/AskAccounting didn't seem to be alive. As the title describes, my parents claimed me as a dependent for the years 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. During this time I was in college, working full time, and living in an apartment hours away from my family. I struggled for years to pay for housing and living expenses for myself on near minimum wage, while paying for full-time school with student loans. My parents requested each year that I file my taxes as a dependent, and being young and dumb and wanting to keep things on good terms, I did as told. There's a long history of problems in my family, and keeping things as civil as possible seemed like the best solution at the time. I did not, however, realize just how much I was giving up by doing so. This past year I learned of the student tax credits my parents received by claiming me as a dependent, while paying for next to nothing to support me; Tax credits meant to ease the burden of someone like me paying for all of their own living expenses while pursuing an education. My parent profited off of me paying my own way through school to the tune of roughly $10,000. In my mind, they basically stole this money from an overworked, underpaid young adult because he simply didn't know any better than to look deeper at his own taxes or afford a CPA. Is there any recourse here, or any means of reporting this to the proper authorities? I'm fortunately in a position where $10,000 is no longer a life-or-death sum of money, but it's the principal of the matter here. That money would have been life changing during the times I really needed it during school, and I made so many sacrifices/gave up so many traditional college experiences which money could never buy back because I simply could not afford extras at the time. I don't care if I can't recoup the money. I feel exploited, I'm done with them, and I simply don't want them to have it. [link] [comments] |
My Shift Manager called me in early but my boss is refusing to pay for the time I worked early. Posted: 13 May 2020 10:00 PM PDT Hi I'm very sorry if this the wrong sub or flair for this I'm just really confused and unsure what actions I can and should take. I work fast food and my county recently lifted restrictions which led to a massive increase in business so my shift manager called me in 2 hours earlier TWICE this week. Normal I'd have just waved it off since I wasn't supposed to work yet but seeing how it was my shift Manager I decided it would be best to comply. When I got to work today my boss informed I would not be getting paid for those 4 hours since I wasn't scheduled to work them. I didn't know what to say and as he walked away I just hoped and assumed he was joking. I received my check at the end of the night and after some quick math I was 4 hours short on pay. TLDR: Boss is not paying for 4 hours worth of work because I "wasn't scheduled" Edit: I work in Tennessee Part Time if that's useful. What can I do here? Am I not entitled to pay for the work I did?
