Does my employer have the right to tell me that I'm not allowed to use food banks - WA

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:44 AM PST

I'm a social worker, and work primarily with homeless teens. It's something I'm passionate about because I fled my mom's sexually abusive boyfriend when I was 13 and have been flying solo ever since, so I can really relate to what it's like being a street kid. I enjoy my job and feel like I'm really good at it. However, I only make about 29k/yr. I have a husband who's a forklift operator, and together we have four children, a cat, and a dog. Our household income is about 40-50% of the median income for Seattle, we live paycheck to paycheck. When crap hits the fan and unexpected expenses come up, we often need to use food banks, and then we normally use things like free clinics and the Salvation Army coat drive. It's not unheard of for me to run into current kids in the program and former clients from work when accessing these services.

My employer overheard some kids (clients) in the office talking about how they saw me with my children at the food bank over the weekend. I brushed it off like, oh yeah they're great folks, our car has been giving us trouble and we needed a little help. No big deal right? I naturally transitioned the conversation into other things that weren't about me.

So my boss pulls me into his office later and starts grilling me about why I'm using the foodbank. Uh, because you pay me 29k/yr? I have a family? My car keeps breaking down and I can't afford to replace it? It was like he was trying to shame me. He was acting like I was gaming the system because I'm a social worker, taking resources because I can, which couldn't be further from reality. He brought up the ethics of seeing clients outside of work and how I needed to be mindful of places I went, saying I shouldn't be going to the foodbanks and resources that we refer clients to--which, spoiler alert, is pretty much all of them in the city. I told him that I was eligible to use them based on my income, that my family depended on them to eat right now, that I wasn't using my employment status to garner any kind of favoritism, and that I went to the foodbanks closest to my house.

He basically told me that I need to stop going to the food bank or I'd be let go.

    Is this legal?

Bride's mother paid off and pick up wedding dress without permission.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:49 AM PST

In Illinois. I'm the maid of honor in a wedding in October. The bride and her mother do not get along. Her mother isn't even invited to the wedding after telling everyone she doesn't approve and some other awful things. After picking out and putting a deposit down on a wedding dress, the bridal store did not call the bride to inform her that her dress was available for pickup. Instead, her mother drove down there, finished paying for the dress (I'm not sure the total amount paid by each person but the dress was around $1,500) and is now holding the dress hostage, locked in a closet in her house.

Does the bride have any legal recourse? The shop essentially sold her dress to someone else. Is it theft by the mother since the bride paid the deposit even though her mother finished paying for it? My first thought is a charge back on the credit card for the deposit since she didn't receive what she paid for, but I'm not an expert here.

Am I obligated to work with a person whose medical condition puts me at harms way?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:54 AM PST

I work at a fast food style coffee place. I work the night shift four nights a week, from 3 pm to 11 pm. From 3 pm to 6 pm, there are four people on the clock, then the manager and the extra worker leave. That leaves the two closers, in this case myself and someone I'll call Lisa for the sake of this, alone until 11 pm.

On Thanksgiving, I am doing the dishes in the back room. The store is empty of customers. Lisa, the woman I work with, is in the front cleaning. Suddenly I hear a strange, deep moaning. I silently approach to see what is going on; I have been warned by Lisa herself that she has epileptic seizures and never to touch her doing such seizures or she WILL hurt me. Apparently she has hurt another coworker during such an event.

Anyway, Lisa is on the floor, swinging her legs up and down as she moans. I say nothing. She doesn't see me. I pick up the store phone and immediately dial 911, confiding that she is having a seizure. They send an ambulance and I hide in the back, not wanting to alert her to my presence and scare her. I hear banging as if she is slamming her fist on the walls. I check on her again, peeking round the corner, and she is now standing, staring blankly out of the window. Again, her back is to me and she cannot see me. I say nothing and silently return to the back. I explain to the operator she is standing, and the operator is rightfully confused. "I thought she was having a seizure." I thought so too. I know nothing about seizures.

At this point, as I'm standing in the back, Lisa suddenly appears. She must have remembered I was there. She is walking directly towards me with clenched fists and clenched teeth. Her demeanor is extremely aggressive and it is obvious she is heading towards me to do something violent. My body reacted with fear and I ran out of the back door to get away from her. I did not know what she intended to do and I didn't want to stay to find out.

Now, I'm scared and running outside in the cold parking lot. I hear the back door open behind me as I go out there. She is following me! She sees me at the end of the parking lot and heads DIRECTLY towards me. I had no phone on me except for the store phone, and I was scared to let go of the operator, so I ran to the drive thru. I was alone with not a single person out there to help me. Luckily she did not pursue me into the drive thru. She kept walking down the street until the police found her and took her to the hospital.

I was very shaken up. The paramedics arrived looking for her but found me, scared to death, hiding in the store with the doors locked. They did not want to leave me alone for I was visibly scared.

I'm assured on the phone by my manager that I don't ever have to work with this woman again. I am grateful as I don't want to ever be alone with her again. I come in for my next shift, and guess who is there? Lisa.

I was livid. My manager did not even call me to let me know things had changed. She takes me aside and tells me, "I legally can't take her off nights. Her medical condition means I can't change her schedule. However I put a third girl on the shift with you so you won't be alone. This is until Thursday when I talk to my boss, then I can see what I can do."

I don't want to work with her at all. I'm livid. The whole time I'm working I'm checking behind my back to make sure she's not coming after me or having a seizure. To make matters worse, Lisa tells all the regular customers that she had a seizure. Over and over I have to hear her bring it up, and it really bothered me that night, and it bothers me even more hearing it again. She says, "I scared the poor girl. She thought I was chasing her." No, she was chasing me. She pursued me outside!

She apologized to me. She said she doesn't remember it at all. She said she does not want me to be afraid of her. She did not apologize for pursuing me, as I don't think she sees it that way. She just apologized for scaring me.

When I told my manager I didn't want to work with her at all, she told me there is nothing she can do. I said, "If you can't move her shifts, can you move mine?" She agreed to do that next week, and also offered to move me to work nights at a different store.

I don't think it is fair I have to inconvenience myself and leave my job completely because of some woman's endangerment to my wellbeing. I don't think it is fair that anyone should have to work with her at this point, but especially not me after what happened! I don't think it is fair I have to change my schedule because this woman came after me.

So, my question is, is it legal that they're not taking action and putting me in danger to work with her? Is it actually illegal to move someone's schedule or remove them from working with the public if their medical condition puts themself and others at harm?

My wife's boss wants her to do extra work for another department without compensation

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:50 AM PST

Another department asked my wife's boss if my wife can help them on a project for 4 hours per week at another location one day each week, and her boss agreed and told her that she has to go.

She's paid hourly (and in a public sector job) and has to log all of her time (obviously), but her boss told her specifically to not log any hours spent working on that project, and that she'll have to make up those four hours by working extra time each week. This also includes the time it'd take her to go to their satellite parking lot to get her car, and the time driving to the other location for this new project – and that's also time that they said they won't compensate her for (and that they won't reimburse her for gas).

The other project hasn't started yet and she'd honestly be happy to help out with it (just frustrated that she has to 'make up the hours' later), but I told her that I think that counts as wage theft. Not a lawyer, hence posting here, but what should we do about this?

    We're in Ohio btw.

Neighbor tells me I will no longer park my car on her side of the road

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:13 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm a first time poster so I apologize if this isn't formatted correctly. This morning I'm walking to my car which is located directly in front of my driveway on the other side of the road. There is a fire hydrant about 16ft behind where I park my car that you have to park a good distance from. The neighbors house in question is a corner house and my car is parked on the side of their house on the road. I do this because of the spaces directly in front of our house are taken by other vehicles of various neighbors(to me, not a problem we share the street. Anyway as I'm getting in my car the neighbor (wife) comes out and yells at me telling me I will no longer be parking my car there. I respond politely with "I'm sorry mam (note these are the first words I have ever spoken to her in my life). I politely inform her me and my brother who parks in the same spot when I'm not there will be moving in two weeks and she wouldn't have to worry about it anymore before Xmas. She says that's not good enough and leaves. I drive to work and it is 10:15 and I'm still pissed.

My worries are that she will do something to my car between now and when I move any advice to legally protect myself would be appreciated. I really don't care about her and would like to just let bygones be bygones but I am afraid if I don't do something now this could end nasty. Thanks ahead of time and happy holidays.

What can I do about a laundry pervert?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 02:24 PM PST

If it helps, I'm in the state of Michigan and a freshman in college.

So this has happened to me about four times now. Sometimes when I do my laundry, I come back and it's obvious my laundry has been messed with. The first time, I threw my clothes in the dryer, and when I come back my clothes were my laundry basket, but all my panties were unfolded and draped on top of my other clothes.

The 2nd time it happened, I found all my bras and panties folded inside of my laundry basket, all my other clothes were still in the dryer

The 3rd and 4th time it's happened was just like the first case.

The security guard let me go through security footage and I saw there was a dude messing with my underwear, but he was wearing a hoodie and we couldn't see his face.

I want to know if this can go anywhere. Technically, he isn't stealing anything. He's just grabbing and looking at my panties, so I'm not sure it's illegal, and I want to know if I have a case before I persue anything.

Also, I know the best way to stop this is to watch my laundry, by schedule is always very busy and I don't have time to sit for 2 hours in a laundry room.

Custody papers say dad gets them every weekend. Dad has been out of state and sends grandparents to take care of them. Do we have to let them go with the grandparents?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:22 PM PST

My wife and I have two children. They are my stepchildren and the father and her have been separated for several years. It is apparent to him that fatherhood is a burden and he has relinquished many of his rights with them in order to get his child support minimized.

He is granted custody of them every Friday at 5 PM and then that ends at Monday at 8 PM. For the last 8 weeks however, his parents, their grandparents, have come and picked the two children (age 5 and 7) up instead of the father. When I inquired with where the father was, they told me he was working in another state but "planned to come get them next weekend."

The custody papers do not make mention of who gets custody on his days in lieu of his absence. All I could find was that in the case of his death, they would be allotted his time. He isn't dead, he just doesn't give a shit.

My question is, since the custody papers do not mention his grandparents outside of the issue of his death, do we have to keep giving them up every weekend? And before I am accused of keeping the children away from their grandparents, the grandparents are the ones wanting us not to give them up! They are just as burdened by having to become parents by their own child's negligence. Please help!

Abusive soon to be ex husband, facing charges, multiple false CPS calls.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:56 AM PST

Obligatory mobile user and this is gonna be a long one, but I appreciate any help or advice.

I left my extremely abusive husband back in August, after he beat me in the head while holding our almost 3 year old son. I had a concussion and a hematoma in my head. After he stopped beating me he took our son and put him in the car and left while I was still trying to stand up and catch my balance. I have pictures of the injuries, as well as doctors notes confirming the injuries. After he found out I called the cops, he told them that I punched our son in the chest, supposedly there was a tiny scratch on my sons chest that he claimed i caused (anyone with a toddler knows they always have some kind of boo boo, keep in mind he had just beat me while he was holding our son). Anyways, we both ended up spending a night in jail because that's just how domestic violence situations normally go in NC.

The next morning when I got out of jail I immediately went and filed for a DVPO. I was granted that and temporary custody of our child. If they had really thought I had hit my child, the judge wouldn't have granted me full custody. I got my son back a few hours later-there was no mark on his chest. My ex then went to the domestic violence women's center (they helped me file the 50-B) and screamed at them and punched the door because they told him they couldn't help him. This is all on record with witnesses. 10 days later we went to court to get the 50-B for one year, he got an attitude with the judge and was yelling that I assaulted our son and the judge wasn't buying it. Also, just to mention, CPS had to investigate the abuse allegations, found no evidence of abuse and closed that investigation early.

Fast forward a few weeks, I was involved in a slight car accident. It was so minor that there was hardly any damage to my vehicle other than a few scratches, and I went to work a few hours later. I also had the paramedics check my son just in case and they rubbed him down, checked his movements, and said he was fine. They even complimented me on how well I had him strapped in his car seat. Well, husband called CPS again. Told them I was involved in a major accident and refused medical care for our son. He also told them I was living with a drug dealer (not true). They came out to my house, talked to me about it and then said they would close the investigation. A few days later he made another call that I was on drugs before they could close the investigation. CPS ordered a drug test, i passed. They closed both of those investigations early.

Then on October 8th he tried to call my cell phone. He was arrested for violating the 50 B. He also had his family members messaging me and trying to intimidate me, but I couldn't do anything about that because no clear threats were made. Then he started messaging my family members, same thing. Then, about 3 weeks ago, (right after he found out I was going after child support) he called CPS AGAIN and told them I had a meth lab in my house, that I burned my son with cigarettes, among many other things. 3 cops and 2 CPS workers showed up at my door ready to take my son. They looked around my house, made me take my sons clothes off so they could take pictures, and found absolutely no evidence of anything. And I haven't heard anything from them since.

We have court tomorrow, again. I am facing assault on a minor under 12 from the allegations that he made saying I punched my son in the chest, and simple assault (he also said i hit him). He is facing assault on a female. It's worth mentioning he is currently on probation for literally the same charge I am facing. I am just kind of wondering what to expect, or what I should do? Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Wife was "pulled over" by an off-duty Highway Patrolman

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:44 PM PST

I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, so please advise if I should post elsewhere

We live in California. Tonight on the way home from work, my wife was pulled over by someone claiming to be a State Trooper. He was driving an older pickup truck, that had a single red "police" light and PA system. It was through the PA system that he told her to pull over. It was clearly a civilian vehicle and had no markings of an official police cruiser. He told my wife to pull over, which she did (she's a little too trusting). She got off the highway and pulled into a restaurant/casino parking lot (she chose a busy, well-lit place on purpose). The "trooper" told her that he observed her talking on her phone and that she was following too close to the car in front of her. She was on the phone, but through a hands-free bluetooth connection. He claimed she was holding the phone to her head, which she wasn't. He did not present a badge, give a name, and was not wearing any official uniform. He merely said he was an off-duty State Trooper and was "giving her a warning." He did not issue any citations.

I need to know how legal of a stop this was. My understanding is that CA law enforcement must have a visible badge and must wear a body camera. I am 99% sure this was some weirdo impersonating an officer with bad intentions.

My wife did not get a license plate because he parked a weird angle and it was raining and dark. she could only give me a limited description of him (white male, no facial hair).

I told her if this ever happens again to not pull over, and call 911 explaining the situation. any other advice is greatly appreciated.

    thank you

I wrote a kid’s book, and I’m being accused of plagiarism.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:07 PM PST

My publisher asked me write an "Author's Note" that provides information as to what my story is about at the end of the book. I said sure, and submitted it to them. However, when I got the book, I saw that the Author's Note was drastically changed.

I recently found out that they plagiarized some of the Author's Note from a website. People online are noticing the plagiarism and are assuming it's me who wrote the Author's Note.

Not too sure how to handle this. Any help mucho appreciated. For the record I'm in the U.S.

New Hampshire. Roofers dropped a brick through my windshield and are denying it. Please help.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:36 PM PST

Hello, thank you in advance for your help.

I rent an apartment in NH, and this week the roof is being replaced. I texted my landlord earlier this week to politely ask her to tell the contractors to be more careful, as they were throwing trash and nails onto our cars and in our parking spot. I was worried about popping one of my new tires. My landlord and the roofing company never told us there was any need to move our cars, and there is no where else to park.

Well lo and behold, my boyfriend walked outside yesterday and a brick had smashed a hole clean through his windshield. The roofers had removed the brick and hid it in the dumpster. There was brick dust in the car that matched the bricks in the dumpster.

We took pictures of everything and filed a police report. Our insurance company says the roofers insurance will have to file the claim. Roofing company is not answering the phone.

Ugh, please help us. We don't have money to spare for a new windshield right now.

A car accident in March of last year was resolved through insurance, but then today I received a call from a debt collector claiming I owe $2000 by the 20th.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:06 PM PST

On March 7, 2018, I was in a crash on the i75 bridge going into Kentucky. A semi merged into my side, and the accident was deemed his fault. However, the accident happened in Kentucky, which is a no-fault state. I filed a claim and had my car totaled. I went to the hospital and found a doctor to go to, to fix severe whiplash and a broken ankle. I live in Ohio, and the chiropractor I went to was in Ohio as well.

This office has been sending bills to my insurance company, which sends them on to the party at fault.

I was under the assumption that this was taken care of, until I received a collections notice this November. According to them, I owe $1,952. A debt collector called today, saying that I need to pay the settlement of $1,000 to him, and will receive a check for the $952 from my insurance company, after I forward his bill to them to be paid. It "has to be paid today, or it goes to court". Being a young and naive person, I gave credit card information, but pushed the date back until the 20th, as there's no way that I have that money right now. I've contacted the insurance company and the doctors office about this. The doctors office has the insurance information and will be sending the bill to them soon. After calling the insurance company roughly a month ago, I was told that I still have PIP money available to pay towards this bill, but do not know the exact amount.

As of right now, the debt collector will take the money on the 20th of this month.

What happens if the insurance company pays the bill before then?

Am I screwed out of $1,000 regardless?

I wish they taught this stuff in school... I feel like a complete idiot.

What happens if you break probation? UTAH

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:47 PM PST

My mom got out of jail yesterday on probation. My step mom told my sister-in-law (who my mom is staying with) to have my mom call & set up a time so my mom could see my little brother, so my mom tried calling her. My step mom then called the cops on my mom for contacting her, since months ago she had placed a protection order against my mom. So my mom is back in jail, and I am so heartbroken for her. She has done many wrong things in the past, but she was out and sober and ready for the future. She had a lot of ideas to help better herself for her and my little brother. It just feels like my step mom tricked her into breaking her probation, as my step mom is the one who said she needs to call and set something up to see my little brother.

Sorry this is all over the place. I am very shook and confused right now. Basically I'm wondering if my mom is going to go to prison?? Will she be out anytime soon? Is it possible the judge would sympathize and give her little to no time?

[Massachusetts] The owner of the building that our business is located in, is selling the building...

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:58 PM PST

Every year we sign a lease in December renewing a year of renting. Instead of a lease renewal we got a friendly letter slipped under our door stating that the owners intend to sell the building and are closing their personal business within the building down the last day of December. We're good to keep paying rent monthly until it sells- which then will be up in the air.

Pretty terrified right now, as we have clients booked out as far as March and at any month- could even be January this place could sell and depending who buys the building can shut down all 6 small businesses on the second floor of this building. I'm assuming we're all kind of screwed but in any event- is there anything that could work in our favor in the event this happens? Like the new purchaser would have to give us at least a month kind of thing- or no since there is no more official lease?

Is an HOA legally obligated to warn us before shutting our water off for periods of 8+ hours?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:04 AM PST

    I live in southern Arizona.

We do have a landlord but she lives across the country and isn't super involved (she's our grandma), and the HOA is really the ruling body of the neighborhood (a bunch of converted condos) and they're the ones we're dealing with.

The problem: I think this neighborhood is really old, and thus experiences pipe problems and/or needs renovation from time to time. Ever since we moved in a few years ago, they've shut off the water to the entire neighborhood occasionally to do things like "fix an underground leak." They used to provide us a day or more advance notice, which was fine, we had time to run down to the store for some water, we could plan ahead by showering or filling our brita before the work was scheduled to be done. But over time, they've gradually given us less and less prior notice. Yesterday, I woke up to the water being turned off. No prior notice. I opened our front door and found a "notice" taped up there, stating that they'd be fixing a leak starting at 9am and to "plan accordingly." But, my fiance left for work almost exactly at 9am as he always does, and there was no notice there yet, which means they taped it up AFTER the water was shut off. I had to go the entire day without water in my own home. Couldn't shower for work, couldn't use the bathroom or wash my hands or even get water. It was off for at least 7 hours, possibly more, I don't know because I had to leave.

It was on again in the evening. But then today, I woke up to it being shut off again, this time with NO NOTICE at all, not even a last minute 'oh shit we forgot to leave notices' notice left after 9am on the door. No notice. Is this legal? I'm beyond frustrated, I really need to be able to use the faciilities in my own house because I partially work from home, and I have a young niece and nephew coming over today to be babysat. I would have prepared beforehand if I had been given adequate notice, but as it is I have literally zero time to drive to the store to buy a shit ton of water.

Is there some kind of law protecting tenants that I can quote just to scare them into properly notifying us?? I get that work has to be done sometimes, I just want to know ahead of time! Do we need to get our landlord involved or should we just take it up with the HOA?

Fraud under 200$, company is suing me and don’t know what to do

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:38 PM PST

I work for this restaurant that has a points system on your phone that allows you to redeem food rewards and discounts for in-store purchases. Basically I was told by my managers for example if a customer pays 70$ Cash on a 70$ bill with no tip I can redeem a 25$ off discount on that bill so I end up pocketing 25$ tip to avoid our large tip out as a server. I ended up being caught by the branch owner and they want to file a police report and a lawsuit against me. The thing is all the workers were told they were allowed to do this, told by the managers of the location. Since the beginning of employment we never went through store policy training or were told that we weren't allowed to take advantage of the points (even have the app).

I mainly used the points for free food during my breaks. This is happening in Alberta, Canada. As well as I have not worked longer than the 3 month probationary period under this establishment.

I am now expecting the police to contact me possibly for questioning and such. I was wondering what my options were? I'm a young person never had any of this happen to me and do not know what to do.

Tl;dr: I redeemed points that customers did not redeem cause I was told by my managers I could do it, everyone in the restaurant does it but now I'm being sued and they are filing a report on me what can I do.

Can jobs access your mental health records if you are diagnosed? If you deny having a mental illness on an application, what is the worst that can happen?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:24 PM PST

    In FL, USA.

I have been diagnosed in the past with depression and anxiety but more likely than not have a mood disorder. I am actively trying to get a diagnosis so I can get proper treatment but I realized the obstacles that come with having a diagnosis... I don't want to have my mental health negatively impact my future job pursuits. I've lied on applications before when asked if I have a mental illness but the jobs were not places that would ever care enough to look into that anyway. Now that I am getting deeper into my career, I worry about future employment. Is it okay to put no? If medical records are supposed to be private, wouldn't they be unable to see that information anyway? If they did find out, other than getting fired for lying, what else could happen?

We've received an ADA Lawsuit, but we do not have a shop or storefront.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:34 PM PST

Our industry is being targeted by one law firm who represents several blind clients. Supposedly they could not access our website.

We do not have a storefront or shop. We have an office in Orange County, California that is strictly available by appointment, but 99.9% of people wanting to make an appointment, we refer to other businesses. We see 1-2 clients a month in person by appointment. in the lawsuit they filed, they kept referring to our company having a storefront/shop, which is not true.

The cost to defend ourselves in this lawsuit is over $100,000. If this happened in our first year of business, we would have had to close down.

How do most small businesses handle situations like this?

I would really appreciate any help in this.

Landlord demands I sign an updated lease for the coming year due to a mistake in the price of rent or will void my upcoming lease altogether

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

So my Indiana landlord currently charges $800 for my apartment, of which they have probably a hundred, and tried to increase the rent to $825 for the coming year because they claim we have a refurbished apartment. I believe I signed a lease with the $825 amount (though I can't find it), and after a few days of pondering, I got curious. I called and asked why I wasn't being charged for this when I moved in since nothing has been updated since I moved in, to which they finally agreed to keep my rent at $800.

When I came in to sign this lease, it said $750 on the rent agreement. I should also mention that this lease would be $40 cheaper if I didn't have another person living here, however the section on the back clearly stated that two people, not just one, could occupy the residence for the stated rent amount, just like my current lease does.

Basically, as far as I can figure, this is legally binding and I am not obligated to correct it, as all the math makes sense. The only figure that does not add up is the security deposit, for which the lease states $800 and I paid $800, however if anything, this figure is too high and I overpaid my security deposit (according to the rent amount being $750).

However, when they finally called today, over a month after signing, to correct the issue, they kinda said it in a roundabout way, probably to not alert me to the fact I'd be saving $50 a month for a year if it wasn't "fixed." When I questioned if they could legally do this, they threatened to void the lease for the coming year (polite way of saying kicking me out).

    Any ideas?

Edit: They also mentioned that they have the original lease I signed for the upcoming year, at the rent amount of $825, and threatened to just use that one instead as well, but I'm assuming that would be automatically voided anyway since the new $750 lease is dated more recently.

Is it legal for a debt collector to contact friends and family?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:11 PM PST

My brother got an email today from a debt collector contacting him about me. His email has his name all over it, so I think it was their full intent after hearing nothing back from me. Is this legal, and if not, what can I do about it?

Massachusetts Son Owes Elderly Mom $200k and Doesn't Pay

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:05 PM PST

My 80+ year-old mother owns a MA farm that's been in the family for many generations and is worth at least $2M. My brother lives on the farm and operates his business there rent-free. It's long been understood that my brother would inherit the farm. She lives an hour away.

Over 20 years ago, my mother loaned my brother over $200k. No paperwork. He occasionally makes payments on the loan but only if she badgers him enough. She's slowing down and this is getting harder and harder. She has a limited income that doesn't cover her monthly expenses so her savings are getting thin. My mom has looked into putting a mortgage on the farm but she doesn't have the income to qualify.

So, at this point, her plan is to have a lawyer draw up a letter, telling my brother that, unless he pays her a set amount each month, she will sell the farm.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Is there any value in sending a letter like this? Does anyone have any other ideas? I've been trying to help her with this long-distance and have run out of possible solutions.
