Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:24 AM PST Background: My husband and I bought a house in 2016 from a bank, as it had foreclosed upon the previous owner. About a year after we moved in, the previous owner showed up at our front door and tried to push past my sister to get into the house, saying she owned it. She left after threatening to call the police, but showed up 4-5 more times over the next 1.5 years, doing the same thing. She brought the police herself once, and they told her to leave once we showed him our contracts from closing on the house. He said that if she came back it would be considered trespassing, and included in his paperwork that she wasn't welcome on the property-- fortunately she hasn't been back since then. We invested in a Ring doorbell and security cameras near each door after the first two visits. After that she brought us to housing court in 2018 to try to evict us (from the house we own) but did not show up because she put our address down as her own in the paperwork, therefore never received the notice to appear since her copy was mailed to us. Fortunately we have title insurance and they send a lawyer to represent us for free, and the judge dismissed the case with prejudice. About a year later, she did the exact same thing but showed up to court saying she has a certified deed to the house so she owns it. The same lawyer represented this time, and the judge dismissed it again. The mail part: A bit over a year ago we began receiving her monthly phone bill in the mail (she didn't just forget to change the address after she moved, there was a 2-3 year gap with no mail in her name) so my husband brought a few of them, unopened, to the post office, explained what had been going on, and they said they'd take care of it. Then in summer 2019, the key to our mailbox no longer worked-- it turned out she brought her deed to the post office, said she lost her key, and asked them to change the lock and give her a new key. Fortunately when my husband realized the key didn't work, he went to the post office and was able to intercept before they gave her the new key, so I don't believe she actually gained access to the mailbox. During this time, the cell phone bills never stopped, and we've been receiving more mail in her name (from a radiology office, the Motor Vehicles Association, and other random non-spam items). I worry she's trying to do the same thing again-- have mail sent to our address, steal it somehow, and attempt to use it to prove residency. My husband said when he told the post office manager what had been happening, they would report it, but we haven't heard anything at all-- and as I mentioned, the mail in her name has increased since then. I tried calling the Post Inspector's hotline, but it went to voicemail and I've never gotten a response from any voicemail I left to them. I'm just kind of at a loss of what my next move should be? I just want this mess to be over. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:51 AM PST EDIT Thank you all SO MUCH for the advice. I didn't expect even one response and to wake up to so many people commenting is almost unreal. Sorry if this post is jumbled, I'm running off of 4 hours of sleep and am still in panic mode. For some back story I'm a 20yo female and I had just gotten a place with my mom about 2 months ago. She did a lease to own contract and was the only one on the lease. She had relapsed after being clean for over a year and accidentally overdosed and passed away about three weeks ago. Her boyfriend had moved in with us, even though I never liked or trusted him when I first met him a few months ago. Turns out they had relapsed together and he had lied to me about knowing if she had. He showed up high as FUCK to her funeral, literally nodding off at her casket and it was so bad that everyone told him he needed to leave. He's been texting me crazy shit like he's drinking and driving, hit a semi, and is high. He's on parole so I called his parole officer to try and speed up the eviction process as safely as possible. I guess in Utah you need a 30 day eviction notice so the detective on my moms case said it would be best to call him. Well the parole officer didn't do shit, I made it very clear that I felt I was in danger and I feel in fear for my life. This morning at around 5am I woke up to a car honking consistently right outside my house, I was so tired that I thought it was morning and someone was honking to pick somebody up. It kept happening for about 5 minutes so I finally rolled over and realized it was dark outside. After that I heard a huge bang come from my moms room, like a dresser or something had fallen. I opened my door and saw my moms light on and heard her boyfriend in there moaning and talking SUPER loud, I literally thought he was in there having an orgy or something. My roommate called her mom since she lives down the street and also had concealed carry, she came over here, ran up the stairs and basically told him to get the fuck out. He had two huge bumps on his head and was bleeding from his mouth and kept saying "I've been hit", but he was just super fucked up on drugs. He said that he had been doing meth and herion. She told him to pack his shit and get out, and I called the police. Turns out the honking was some chick in his car high as shit freaking the fuck out. The police got here and did NOTHING. They didn't arrest him, the didn't take his car, they just left and didn't do anything. I'm genuinely terrified for my life. I lost my aunt to domestic violence a few years back and this is exactly what went down. PLEASE HELP :( [link] [comments] |
Odd situation unfolding after the birth of my daughter. Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:43 PM PST My daughter was born in Henry Ford hospital in Michigan about a month ago. Our hospital stay was normal and went as expected. Our daughter was born and we left in normal time(about 48 hrs but they told us we could leave after 24 hours). We were told we had a healthy baby girl in every way and were sent on our way. 7 days later child protective services showed up at our door, and said that someone had made an allegation of neglect regarding our newborn daughter. After hearing the allegations, it was clear that the hospital was the source of the allegations. Allegation was that our daughter was born w drug withdrawals. CPS worker said they claimed the symptoms included "fever, respiratory rate(didnt specify more that that), and sinus issues". These "drug withdrawal symptoms" either did not exist at all when she was born, or they did exist and there is simply no records that confirm that these symptoms were present. If she was born w these issues it seems negligent to not mention it to either parent and not document it in any of her medical records from birth. Idk how all this could've happened. I'm very upset. I went from feeling like a proud father, to being scared, confused, embarrassed, angry, etc, as one would when they're accused of neglecting a newborn child. Sorry for the long post. I'd be very grateful for anyone taking the time to read this and offer some advice. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

My ex filed bankruptcy on the medical costs I paid for our kids and named ME as a creditor Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:51 AM PST Backstory: I have always paid for the medical costs of our children, and per the law, I inform my ex and send receipts within 30 days. At one point, he refuses to pay child support, let alone the other obligations - which are in our decree. So my family law attorney and I sue him for contempt. He doesn't show for his OWN trial and is found guilty. $9k in judgements, plus about $5k in judgment for attorney's fees. He is ordered to pay an additional $200 per month towards the arrears. This gets paid for about a year. Jump to now: he filed bankruptcy, chapter 7, and claimed me as a creditor. Claimed the money that he owes in "out of pocket" medical costs, plus the judgements against him. The bankruptcy was discharged last month. This is my question: What recourse do I have, if any? I read from a federal court website that "domestic support obligations" are not dischargeable, but out-of-pocket medical costs do not seem to be included in that category. Those obligations are defined as "alimony, maintenance, or support". Also, I read that court judgements ARE dischargeable. So this guy, who hasn't helped pay for braces, broken bones, ingrown toenails, or even fluoride, gets to just file bankruptcy...on his CHILDREN?!?! PLEASE help me Edit: location is complicated. The decree is in Utah, I live in Washington, ex lives in Indiana, bankruptcy is in Indiana...I think [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:02 PM PST A coworker asked if I could watch his place while he was out of the country. I was a little suspicious when he told me his dogs were taken care of but in the area we live, it is possible for pipes to freeze and I assumed he wanted someone there so no one would break in. He specifically asked me to stay there every night. Well, I slept there two nights ago after a long flight. But last night when I was getting ready for bed, I went to the bathroom and noticed that there was an alarm clock in the bathroom facing the toilet. Odd. So I googled the company on the front and discovered it was a hidden camera (non-streaming, just SD card). I found 3 other hidden cameras, in the other bathroom and in the bedroom. I immediately unplugged all the cameras and called the non-emergency line. The cops told me there's nothing they can do. He is allowed to put cameras wherever he wants in his residence. I tried calling the Troopers but they said that the local law enforcement was in charge of this sort of thing. I was never disclosed that there would be cameras. I found this http://www.akleg.gov/basis/statutes.asp#11.61.120 Alaska statute. Does it apply to my case? How do I make sure this creep doesn't do this to anyone else? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:35 AM PST Is there a way I can prove I didn't do this? I had drugs on me, and I would never have given them consent to search my person. This was in Georgia, United States. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:14 PM PST I recently found out that my dad had took all of the money from me and my sisters savings accounts and gave it to a woman he had met online through Zelle, and mailing checks. Since the accounts are custodial and I am underage, the money was under my name but I couldn't take it out myself. Is what he did illegal? I've already made a new bank account but what other precautions can I take? [link] [comments] |
Found out my ex-husband was charged with Child indecency by sexual contact- PLEASE HELP Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:05 AM PST Hello everyone, Some quick background info- I live in Texas and have 2 kids (son is 7, daughter is 8) with my ex-husband, who I was married with for 8 years. He was a horrible controlling husband and I can't be more than happy that I am divorced from him of 2 years. To my disdain, he has half custody of our children, but somehow we are able to assure that our children are happy. Back in September, Child Protective Services reached out to me to inform me that there has been a report of sexual abuse on my two children with the perpetrator being my ex-husband. The investigation has been closed after they determined there was not enough evidence of sexual abuse. The other day I was looking for some old divorce documents for my record online and found that my ex-husband was arrested on and charged with Child Indecency by Sexual Contact in November. His original court date was 02/20/2020, but has been re-scheduled to 03/12/2020. I have contacted Child Protective Services to request the documents of the investigation back in September. They told me that Child Protective Services can't do anything because my children aren't involved and to contact a lawyer. I fear my children may be involved and if not, something may happen to them in the future. Should I confront him about this? He doesn't know that I found out. I am really lost right now and not sure what to do. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance. TLDR- found out my controlling and emotionally abusive ex-husband that has half-custody of our two children and I don't know what to do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:03 PM PST I'll start with the question for this story. Do we even have a case here? This is in CO, USA. Okay, so my friend was the GM of a retail pretzel place. This particular one is a franchise, so contact with the owners is quite frequent. They are the ones who deliver store supplies, as well as deal with any other sort of requests the GM may have. They are the total store support. Or at least they should be. Rewind back to December 2019. GM directly asks the owner for new hot pads, as the old ones have giant holes in them. They're told: "Of course we'll bring you hot pads!" (not verbatim, you get the jist) A month goes by. No hot pads. GM and all other staff work with 600+ degree ovens constantly, so these hot pads are pretty important to have for staff safety. Corporate even came to visit the store, saw the tattered hot pads, and was made aware that the owners still hadn't brought any. ANOTHER month goes by, and we're all caught up to now. STILL no hot pads or any sign that they were coming soon. This is finally when GM was working, used the old, awful hot pads, slipped and got a second degree burn on their forearm. You would think that any employer who cared (or was sane) enough would offer worker's compensation immediately. Or at least ask if they were okay. The response GM received after telling owners about the burn was: "Oh yeah, I got a couple burns a few days ago, too." Then asked if GM had bandaids and burn cream. Again, this burn was large and not okay. About a third of their forearm. After the owners didn't mention anything about worker's comp, GM basically had to fight them before they offered. Evidence was gathered for the worker's comp case, as well as Employer negligence. GM has seen the doctor and has been treating the burn accordingly. Things get stranger from here. First off, they gave GM the wrong insurance company to go through. The claim was paused briefly, due to this. The insurance agent contacted the owner's broker (with great difficulty) to switch to the correct insurance company and open the claim back up. When the claim was back up, GM went to the doctor for a follow up. GM was cleared for work, but still in great pain. Today, District Manager calls GM and SCREAMS at them. DM asked multiple questions pertaining to GM's thoughts on getting another job. When GM responded with "Yes, but nothing is lined up" DM became irate, then hung up on them. DM also admitted to telling an ex-employee to stalk GM's personal Facebook account. When the GM confronted ex- employee about this, his response didn't match what DM was saying. DM told GM that one of their Facebook posts was "slandering" the company. The post in question was asking if it was normal to not be offered worker's comp after a work related incident. THEN, spouse of owner calls GM and tries to apologize FOR the DM and owner, even though the spouse actually admitted to not knowing what was going on. NOW, we've just gotten word that GM is potentially getting fired tomorrow. FOR WHAT? So sorry for the long post!! Please, any help or advice for this would be amazing. Do we have a case? If even MORE context is needed, I'd be happy to provide. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:06 PM PST Edit: I am in the U.S. but I think the vendor is in China I purchased a Baby Yoda plushie from a one of those websites that pops up on your FB newsfeed as an ad on December 5th. It was right after The Mandalorian came out, which my girlfriend loves, so I thought it would be a great Christmas gift. The plushie was "guaranteed" to arrive within 20 business days. Christmas came and went and I never saw the plushie or heard anything from the vendor. At the beginning of January I tried contacting the vendor: email, calling, etc. and never heard from them. I put in a dispute with Paypal around mid-January; they said they would investigate it and I should not have any more contact with the vendor. Of course, the vendor then started replying to my emails, saying my package was on the way, there was a problem with shipping, blah blah blah. I never replied to anything. Well, by mid-February, I still had not received the package and Paypal completed their investigation, blamed the vendor, and refunded my money. Not 3 days after this happens does a package show up looking nothing like what the original description or picture showed. I gave it to my girlfriend who really likes it, but I am pretty pissed because it was so late, not what I expected when I ordered, but hey, at least I got my money back. Today, I received an "Invoice" from the vendor coming from the official Paypal email saying the following: "Dear Valued Customer, This is [vendor]. Thank you for choosing us, it is such a large pleasure to have you as a valued customer This is to bring to your kind attention that your parcel was delivered! However, Paypal has already closed your case in your favor after your parcel was shipped. Therefore we would be grateful if you could recharge the payment. Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter. We are looking forward to receiving your reply soon. Yours sincerely, [vendor]" It's true that something came but it was almost 3 months late, not what I wanted, and Paypal already refunded me the money. They also say, "we would be grateful." Do I have to pay this? Could I get into any legal trouble for this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Work clock in system deducting a 30 minute upon hitting the 8 hour mark- is this legal? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:36 PM PST Hi there, I'm just asking on behalf of a friend. The state this is in is PA. My friend currently works a 7 hour and a half closing shift, if things go right. They do not take a break at all ever. They are the only one that closes in this location though, so sometimes it can cause them to go past the 8 hour mark, to where at their job they are entitled to a 30 minute break. Obviously though since they are at the end of the shift, they cannot take the break so they just go home after they're done. However, their timeclock is very weird. If anyone that hasn't taken a break works past 8 hours, the system auto deducts 30 minutes for a "break". So you could work 7 hours and 59 minutes, but the moment you hit 8 hours you're actually getting paid for 7 hours and 30 minutes. I'm saying this is very illegal, but my friend disagrees and just says this is how their clock in system at work goes. [link] [comments] |
Neighbors knocked a shared wall down, now I hear their whole lives. Help. Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:40 PM PST I live in PA, and the property belongs to my girlfriend's mother. We live in a row home, and the neighbor that we share a wall with has knocked down the concrete wall that insulates our two houses. There is now, I think only wood and drywall separating their horse from ours. It's been about 2 months I think, and we can smell what they cook, we can hear them talk, we can hear them have sex, they frequently blast music, and we think some bugs have been coming through the wall too. Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:20 AM PST My parents are in the middle of a divorce. A bit of backstory, my mother has been the only one working for over 15 years under the statement that my father had to stay home and take care of me. I have not lived with them in over 7 years, and in that time he has made no effort to try and get a job or support the marriage in any tangible way. She has finally decided to stop supporting him and has filed for a non-contested divorce in the state of Florida. He now sees the $$$ going away and is starting to call me about a few things. The first one: my mother took out a parent plus loan in her name when I went to college to help me pay for it. My senior year they sold a house and decided to use the money to pay off the loan instead of paying off the mortgage on their primary house. He thinks I owe him this money. We don't have any written agreements that I was to pay these loans off. Aside from the basic "yeah, sure" when I went to college, there is nothing anywhere that I am responsible for these loans that were paid for 4 years ago or so. I would also imagine that the agreement would have had to be made when the loans were paid off? The second one: I took one of the family cars to college 5+ years ago (I couldn't have a car on campus the first 2 years). The running assumption for years has been that it is my car, and they just haven't signed it over. I was paying insurance/ maintenance/ etc. The title was in my father's name only, and he signed it over to me this year before the registration expired. He signed it over with no talk of payment for the car, and I didn't talk to him for about 2 months afterwards despite numerous attempts to contact him. Now that the divorce papers have been signed, he all of a sudden cares that I didn't pay anything for this car, and wants me to pay him for it. (This is not even to mention, I went and got my own insurance, when I registered the car, and he went and cancelled the old policy and kept the check (~$300) and has not said a peep about it.) Is there anything he can do to me? None of these items were listed in the divorce settlement he agreed to and signed. I think he is trying to guilt me into giving him money, and squeeze money he is not necessarily entitled to out of this, even though morally if I paid anyone for these items I would probably pay my mother. Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:07 PM PST I was indicted on drug charges a few years ago here in Virginia. I was set up by a Confidential Informant (snitch). Now, I lost everything, my job, my car, and my self-esteem. I paid for a lawyer to represent me, hoping that would help my situation. I had never been in trouble before, ever. I found out later, that my lawyer that I was paying, was also the lawyer for the snitch. My question is, how is this legal? He was supposed to help me in lowering my sentence, but at the same time, he needed me to serve time so that the snitch would get credit for "taking me down". Can I do anything legally now? Someone seen a hit and run on my car and left a note Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:39 PM PST I live in Denver, CO and someone hit and cracked my bumper in the parking lot where I park. My car is fine, just some moderate cosmetic damage. I wasn't there too see it happen but when I came out to head out for work I seen the damage and a note left on my car. The note was not from the driver who hit my car but a third party who seen it happen. The note basically said that they seen it and gave me the license plate number from the driver who did it. Unfortunately they didn't leave their contact information so I feel like I am without a witness. I'm not sure if it is still liable to file a police report since I didn't see it or know who the third party was. What should I do in the situation? [link] [comments] |
Where would I go to find proof I was Empacipated? (Kansas.) Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:41 PM PST Hi everyone so sorry to bother you. I (27 female.) receive disability benefits and on occasion need to provide certain bits of paperwork to the people in charge of that sort of thing. Normally it's nothing too hard just proof of my address and things like that. However this year they are requesting something I'm not sure how to find. Proof of my emancipation (I was 15 at the time.) papers. I'm not entirely sure where to go for these papers and I'm also wondering why they want them not after all this time (I've been living solo for about a year and before that was a live in caregiver for seniors.). But I figured I should just find the papers and get it over with. I have reason to suspect a copy may be in my parents lock box but for reasons I'd rather not go into I'm not speaking to my step father at the moment. So can I just go down to the courthouse and explain what's going on and they'll point me in the right direction? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:47 AM PST This is a follow-up to my previous post. My company is being sued, we're going to court today. Our attorney declared a conflict of interest and stopped representing us three days ago. As I stated in my previous post it's not because I didn't pay her. I've tried reaching her all day even though I wasn't supposed to, but have not been successful. I've called the court yesterday and was told my attorney hasn't filed a motion to withdraw, nor a motion for continuance. So I'm going to court in a few hours with no legal representation, haven't heard from my lawyer in days, and I'm freaking out. I don't want to go to trial without an attorney, and I'm sure the judge will be mad at me for not telling him about this sooner. My question is: can I file a motion for continuance even though I'm not a lawyer? If yes, how should I proceed? And will I have to provide the exact reason why our attorney is no longer representing us? Any help will be greatly appreciated, this is kind of an emergency now. Edit: I'm in VA [link] [comments] |
Ex is breaking so many parts of our custody agreement. (TX) Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:39 PM PST Here's a list of rules broken: does not use even 50% of his allotted custody time, does not give notice to not using any of this custody time, does not call roughly 50% of the time he is supposed to, did not cover insurance for our child when he left his job within the two week window, stopped child support and quit his job specifically to get a job that will allow him to pay less, left our child with his mom while he went out of state on his custody dates without telling me, currently moving but is obligated to inform me two months in advance and still hasn't actually told me (or the state) so. We are NOT divorced. We have been separated for like 7 months. I'm kind of drowning. His choices are impacting his child's stability and have caused our toddler to start therapy. His choosing to do some of these things is impacting me and our kiddo financially. What can I do? What forms or people can I contact to start this complaint? I have kept really good notes since October to state my case on this. [link] [comments] |
Irs just sent my boyfriend a bill saying he owed money from when he was 10 years old Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:34 PM PST Currently in Wyoming, my bf was born in Lousiana if it's relevant. My boyfriend filed his taxes for the first time this year through H&R block and was told by the service that he'd get a $312 refund. We got an envelope in the mail from the IRS and opened it thinking it was the check. It was a bill. The IRS took the $312 refund and applied it to "tax owed for 2009" (exact wording on the bill). The total he still owes is $335.35. Like the title says, he was 10 years old as of that June. What in God's name could a kid that age do to accumulate $647.35 in tax debt? Details that may or may not be relevant, in no particular order: -His father died serving in the Army in 2006 and my boyfriend received "benefits" for it, but I have no idea what they were and neither does he because he was a kid at the time. His mother isn't helpful with figuring this out, she just said that these nebulous "benefits" might be what he's being taxed on -His adult family did questionable things in the wake of the dad's death so it may be possible someone got and sold his social security number -His dad was married to another woman at the time of his death and she disappeared off the face of the earth after either taking or selling everything of value that the dad was in possession of. (I know she sold their house and a collection worth several thousand dollars, and it was implied they had much more when his stepmom disappeared) -I called the phone number on the bill and was told via automated message that the offices are closed. I'm going to try again in the morning but for now I'm turning to these forums (also called the taxpayer advocate service, same story) -I couldn't find any info that would answer my question on irs.gov -There's a section on the bill labeled "what you need to do" that says he doesn't need to do anything, but the rest of the bill implies he needs to pay it. I'm confused; does he do nothing or pay it? Neither of us is paying any part of the bill until we know what it's for. What could the IRS want a 10-year old to pay for? Edit: also posting this to r/tax [link] [comments] |
Ex left me in debt for furniture she kept, won't make payments on, but I'm responsible Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:05 PM PST My ex and I opened a credit card at Ashley's Furniture HomeStore a few years back through Synchrony Bank. We got a dining room set, entertainment stand, and coffee table, totaling about $2,000. When we broke up, we agreed (verbally) she would keep the furniture and make the payments. I was and still am the primary cardholder for our account and I have not been able to transfer that to her. She changed the login info, and won't make payments. I get a dozen calls a day from Synchrony bank and their debt collectors to make payments for the furniture she agreed to take responsibility for. I have texted her to ask what's going on, but no response. Is there any way I can relinquish financial responsibility for this account? Interest and late fees have the total somewhere around $2,500 at this point. (I closed the account thinking that would help. It didn't.) Now I'm getting missed payments on my credit score and I have no idea what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. If it's relevant, I'm in Ohio. [link] [comments] |
I’m being fired because my boss is scared that I will contract the Corona virus Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:37 PM PST *Edit: Situation clarified! Thank you all! I'm bummed but that's just how things are. I hope no one else finds themselves stuck in a similar situation. I am in Arizona and several peers have said that this is illegal, however the company employs less than 20 people so labor laws are different. Is my boss really allowed to do this? Also, I'm aware my state is a right to work state, but several people have advised me that he cannot fire me because of a disease that I may or may not get. Please help me, I do not want to lose my job, but I also do not want to be out a thousand dollars if I cancel this trip. The CDC says it is still safe to travel with precautions. [link] [comments] |
