Sex offender wants to sue us for harassment Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:32 AM PST Hello all - my wife recently found out there is a sex offender living near us. We have a six year old son who has two friends he plays with in the neighborhood. My wife, told my son not to go near this individual and if they did ever come out while the kids were at play, to come inside the house. My son then told his friends and then his friends decided to go to the individual's house to ask about the situation. My son was not involved with this. Now it's been a few months later, and today while I was at work, the individual's spouse confronted my wife, attempting to tell her that the individual was innocent, etc. My wife said she didn't need to hear the story and was only concerned about the safety of our child. Later, both the individual and their spouse came back to our house explaining themselves again, and also stating the the two kids my son plays with (not OUR son) were now throwing rocks at their door and that now they may sue US for harassment. If these two are being harassed by the kids from across the street, how is that our problem? Does this person even have a case? All we did was tell our son to stay away from the person because he was dangerous, which is a matter of public knowledge. [link] [comments] |
My dying husband is a bigamist? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:42 PM PST My husband and I married over 10 years ago. Our marriage had its ups and downs, but mostly downs. However, he's been diagnosed with stage four brain cancer and doesn't have much time left. So I decided to stay with him because I still care for him. Recently, I got an anonymous message from someone on social media. That person was his ex-wife. From what he told me about her was that she was an evil cheater and divorced her 3 years before we got married. But as I spoke to her, I noticed that my husband has a pattern of co-dependence and stealing money. What he had done to her, he did to me. She also told me that he faked his death years ago, only to find out he was alive when she was planning her own wedding. But the main purpose of contacting me is to make sure my marriage to him was valid. My husband shared our wedding video and showed the date. She must done the math as she showed me her divorce papers, finalizing 13 months after we got married. I remembered when we got married, he told me that his brother took cared of it. There was nothing stated that our marriage was void by the clerk office. But if we got married before his divorce was actually filed according to his ex-wife, then he committed bigamy. I asked him about it but he denied it. But if he dies soon and indeed committed bigamy, the entire marriage we had was a lie. I don't know what to do. The ex-wife suggest to do a background check or even contact the clerk office to find out when they actually divorced. The way his ex-wife is telling me shows that she could be telling me the truth and I married a fraud the entire time. Please help me. [link] [comments] |
Employer refusing to mail final paycheck until I physically meet him Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:30 AM PST Hello, I am a resident of Georgia, and from what I understand our Dept of Labor has no final paycheck laws so everything defaults to the federal level. My previous employer doesn't do direct deposit, and I am physically unable to go to their corporate office to pick up my check. So, I sent a friend who was a coworker there. Upon arrival, when asking for my check in addition to their own (something they had done successfully before and something that many coworkers do for others) the boss said "Fuck no, not until he comes in here and physically talks to me" Is this legal? I cannot get to their office. I have moved. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 11:49 AM PST I'm using a throwaway due to people at work possibly knowing my main account. Very few people know what happened and I'd like to keep it that way. My boss was fired for sexual harassment. He said inappropriate things to me and grabbed me. The situation was very one sided, as I am a lesbian and had no intentions of engaging in an inappropriate situation with my boss. I had proof of the things he said so HR took it very seriously. He was placed on admin leave then fired 2 days later. His wife messaged me on Facebook the same night he was sent home on admin leave. She accused me of being the "other woman" and said some pretty hurtful things. She has since messaged me about 5 times on Facebook. I didn't respond, blocked her, then moved on. Yesterday, I got a text message to my personal cell phone from her. She was much nicer and asked for me to please explain what happened so she's not supporting someone who did something wrong. I'm not sure what to do. If I were in her situation, I would want to know. I am not the only person he did these things to, I was just the only person who had proof. I'm worried she's going to come to my job or follow me to my home. I have made HR aware of her contact attempts but they've done nothing. Not really sure there's anything they'd even be able to do. Any advice is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:19 PM PST It's been awhile now, and when I ask my mom about it she said that it never happened and I must have imagined it. How can I check to see if my dad had a will, and if I can read it? My dad passed away in a foreign country, and we were living in California at the time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:40 AM PST My girlfriend is 19 years old and is living with her parents. She had left on a month long trip, a month ago and came back Friday. During this trip her parents took her vehicle to diagnose and fix an issue. The vehicle is registered and insured in her name. The bill came out to be $200. The parents then took the money out of her account. Her bank account is under the umbrella of her parents and so as far as the bank is aware they are allowed to do that. My girlfriend never new this happened untill she came home and her parents told her what they did. She never allowed them to do it and she had earned this money herself. Within the Canadian law, are the parents lawfully allowed to do this, or is it simply morally not cool? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:48 AM PST So to start off with my pupils are always way bigger than the average person. They have always been this way since I was a kid. Not sure why but I guess it really doesnt matter for this. So last night I was on a road trip and I was heading home after a game really late and I got pulled over about 1245am. It was just a regular cop at first and he kept asking questions about my drug use history and I dont ever do drugs. And at the time I wasnt sure why he was asking. But then he explained why and I just tried to explain to him my eyes are always like this. Of course he didnt believe me ( go figure) and calls down a state trooper. He ran so many tests and even some test he called "unorthodox" himself. It's like 20 outside and I'm freezing and I'm shaking from nerves and the cold. I have never had this happen to me before it was an awful experience. I did eye test blow and go he looked in my mouth nose the walk test seriously everything. I wasnt allowed to go for almost an hour. I think they thought I was some 21 year old punk who was up to no good but all I wanted to do is watch my team play. He was trying to catch me in a lie i figure. I was pulled over in ohio but I live in WV So they finally say i think your lying but I'm going to let you go home and get my fiance out of the car and make her do a test and she was good to go and he wouldn't let me drive my car home. Made her drive. Which I though was weird because I was fine. But we finally leave So my question is to avoid this shit from ever happening again, what can I do to make them right off the bat to believe my eyes are always like this? I really appreciate any help I can get USA WV [link] [comments] |
[NY] I was sent an unwanted illegal image on Snapchat and am panicking Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:12 AM PST I really need some advice because I'm freaking out, I know this post is long but I'd appreciate it if you read all of it. I met someone on an adult seeking adult forum and we were exchanging porn on Snapchat. I sent them a picture of a verified pornstar and then I asked what they were into/currently watching. To my horror they sent me back what looked like a highly illegal CP image. I immediately blocked the person and filed an anonymous report with NCMEC in which I said a Snapchat user (including their username) sent me apparent CP. I stated I did not have any chat logs since I had blocked the person on Snapchat I've done some research and found out that if Snapchat is aware of someone sending CP, they file a report to LE that includes both the Sender and recipient. Reading this sent me into a full on panic attack because I did not want this image. I'm now worried about LE kicking in my door if they see me as an intended recipient of this image Is there anything more I can do? I do not have the image in my possession, I never implied I wanted such an image and I kept a screenshot of the report I filed via NCMEC. I appreciate any guidance you guys have to offer because I want zero part of being implicated in this [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:13 AM PST TLDR at the bottom. His dad is aware we are watching him and knows where we live. We are watching him because the dad knows my SIL is dating someone new and is going through a "bad spell" with it. He's got an anger issue and my SIL didn't want him watching their son today while she's at work. The mother has told us not to open the door if he does show up. There is no custody agreement but the dad is on the child's birth certificate. What am I allowed to do in the confines of the law if he shows up and demands his son? I fully expect the guy to smash our window in if we told him to leave without his son. If that happened, I'd be legally allowed to defend us and my property right? I'd obviously dial 911 if showed up. But I just want to make sure my wife and I are doing the right thing from a legal standpoint. Sorry for the rambling. Thank you in advance. TLDR: babysitting my nephew at my home with mother's(my SIL) permission. What do I do if the dad shows up? Mother has told us not to open the door. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST Writing this on behalf of my mother. She works for a temp agency which was absorbed by another group. This group auto enrolled all the employees onto their health insurance. My mother has carelink through cook county hospital. When she tried to pick up her seizure and high blood pressure medications she was told she was activated under another health care plan and had to buy her medications somewhere else. We have tried calling and they do not answer. Carelink is requiring a paper stating that my mother is not under their healthplan. They sent us a paper saying my mother had healthcare from 04/2019 that ended on 12/2019. This was unknown to her as she never agreed to it and her cheques were never garnished for the health care fees. When we contact them they say the bosses have left to Florida and are unreachable. This company she has not worked for since January. What can we do? My mother's chest is starting to hurt. We had to buy her seizure medication from pocket since that was the most important. [Colorado] I am paying for my neighbor's utilities Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:41 AM PST This is my first time posting on this sub, apologies if my syntax isn't great. I live in a house that has been split into two units, with separate lease agreements. In our unit, we pay for water, electricity, and internet that applies solely to us. The gas bill that we pay for covers both our and the neighboring unit, there is one gas meter for the entire house and arrangements were never made to change that. This property has an irrigation system installed that services both ours and our neighbor's yards. This was not explained in the lease. This was not brought to my attention as a new tenant, but by my roommate who lived here last year, who herself didn't know about this until the end of the previous lease. She learned this while speaking with her roommate who had been the one in charge of the gas bill. My roommate also told me that previous to our current lease, there was an arrangement to get reimbursed 40% of the gas bill by the landlady each month to alleviate this discrepancy. No such arrangement had been explained by the landlady to the current tenants. Upon bringing this to our landlady, she explained that yes, we are paying for our neighbor's gas throughout the year (including very cold, very snowy Rocky mountain winters), but they pay for the irrigation throughout the warmer months and these figures even out. I requested to see the figures to be sure this was accurate, and she has not gotten back to me in two months regarding this. I don't know what to do about this but it seems very sketchy. Ive heard Colorado isn't as friendly when it comes to tenant rights but I feel like this is a unique case. Edit: Here is an excerpt of my lease taken from the section marked "Utilities": "Resident shall be responsible for paying for the following utilities or services connected with the premises: water & sewer (x) electricity & ga[s] (x) trash(x) phone (x) cable (x) the resident is responsible for changing the above marked items to their name, on or before, the date of first occupancy. If the resident fails to do so, the resident shall be liable too the Agent for reimbirsement of such charges. Provisions of and the payment for utilities listed above but not checked shall be the responsibility of owner/agent. The party responsible for any particular utility or service shall not be liable for failure to furnish the utility or service when the cause of such failure is beyond that party's control." Edit 2: There is no way to control the neighbor's thermostat from our unit. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:28 PM PST To provide some background, my mother is incredibly abusive. Last year, she kicked me out of the house into the cold and reported me as a runaway— I had nothing but a single pad, my phone, and lip balm. I did not have the time to take any valuables with me, like my wallet or my Wacom tablet that is my main source of income. I'm a minor and located in NC. The minute I turn 18 I plan to discreetly move out with either friends or my boyfriend while my mother is away at work, and take only items that my mother has purchased specifically for me/in my designated bedroom. I plan to take everything, such as my bedframe, dresser, etc. There are a few valuables such as my custom computer and camera, however they were bought by my father. There is also the possibility of being kicked out again, possibly for good. I want to be ready and prepared in case it ever happens again. I'm wondering if my mother would have any legal case against me to accuse me of theft, whether it be me moving out all the items in my bedroom to another location without her knowledge, or if I take any valuables before being kicked out (or running away for my own safety.) I'm also wondering about the legal complications of allowing people (movers for example) into our house to remove these items without the homeowner, aka my mother's consent. I want to move out quietly and discreetly because I do not want her knowing where I am out of fear for my own safety and whoever is associated with me. I just want to have no contact with her as soon as possible. CPS has been contacted by my school counselors, but they have not responded. My father is unfortunately, more abusive than my mother, and I do not wish to live with him. I'm just counting the days until I'm able to graduate highschool and working my ass off to get a scholarship so I don't need any of my parents to pay a dime. So, does my mother have any legal grounds to accuse me of theft if I move out items purchased for me, in my bedroom once I turn 18? Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
I’ve been served papers to pay my landlord X amount of money Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:58 AM PST OK, this is my first time posting on this subreddit so please excuse me if I did this incorrectly. I'm on a lease with another tenant in this apartment. I trusted him to pay the rent in full. This was a huge mistake, I'm aware of this now. I sent my portion of the rent to him every month. I have receipts for that on my end. Apparently there's been multiple problems with the rent being late and not being paid in full that I was unaware of. This guy kept all problems to himself. I've been served papers 2 days ago to pay back the landlord what we owe. Which is quite a lot of money unfortunately I'm not sure what to do in this situation, I'm located in NYC. On the paper that was given to me it says I have 14 days to pay this or the landlord will start the process of eviction. What happens if I dispute this? I'm aware I have to take legal action against this other tenant. Our lease actually ends in March. I am going to housing court to get legal advice this afternoon. Any information or help would be fantastic. I appreciate your time reading this. [link] [comments] |
[NY] Shopping mall manager refused to let me move my car until a tow truck arrived Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:45 AM PST New york - Long Island Last night my wife and I went out to dinner, and we parked in a strip mall lot right next to the restaurant. When we get inside I asked the hostess if that is where we were supposed to park, and she said I was actually supposed to park behind them, not next to them. My wife was seated, and I went to move the car to find a truck sitting right behind me with a man at the wheel. I asked him to move so i could park at the restaurant parking lot, but he refused, saying that he had already called a tow truck on me since i was parking illegally. I explained to him that I parked there mistakenly not more than two minutes ago and was trying to move to the right lot, and he just pointed to a sign that said "Parking for patrons of XXX shopping center only, all others will be towed at owners expense". He absolutely refused to move the truck so I could park no matter how much I argued with him. I called the police non emergency line but I was told this was a 'civil dispute' and they would not get involved. I ended up missing my dinner as I was not seated in time, and had to pay 350 bucks once the tow truck came directly to the driver. I did get the name of the tow truck company, and took pictures of the driver of the truck blocking me. Is this something i can try to recover damages from? It was at night, all the shops in the strip mall were closed, and I was not there more than 2 minutes max before I tried to repark in the correct lot. [edit] The tow truck had a mobile credit card machine, which is how i paid. Should i call my credit card company and dispute the charges? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:22 PM PST My uncle lived in the Austin area (Pflugerville) and was supposed to pick up the car from the dealership tomorrow. My parents are going down to Austin on Monday to look for any paperwork he may have left behind. My uncle was unmarried and did not have any children in case that is important for any reason. Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Michigan fence company cut my tree down Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:24 AM PST At the end of August of last year, one of my rear neighbors knocked on my door and asked me to sign an approval for him to take down the chain link fence that separates our yards, and put up a new, vinyl privacy fence. I signed this document giving my approval, and took a photo of it. This week, I went into my back yard, where there were a number of weeds and a very old crabapple tree that had been along the fence, to find it all cleared, save for the stump of my tree. I'm pretty upset about this. To just remove something that had been there for probably more than 20 years without a second thought is upsetting to me. Especially since it's mine and I can't ever get it back. I don't know exactly when the fence went up or when my tree was cut down. I can't see that part of my yard from the house because I'm not tall enough and my windows are high and small, and haven't gone out there since winter started. I went and knocked on their door and asked the woman who answered the door if they were aware that my tree had been cut down, and she said she didn't and she'd send her husband over when he got in. 2 days later (yesterday) he stopped by while I was at work and told my roommate that he would pay for the tree and left his number. I'm not sure where to go from here. [link] [comments] |
Neighbors won't keep chickens out of our yard Posted: 15 Feb 2020 12:38 PM PST I've never been on Reddit before, so I'm sorry if this isn't the place ^^' We have neighbors that live behind us that have free roaming chickens. Their yard is fenced in, with part of our fence connected to theirs, but their chickens always cross over. This wasn't an issue until they became way too comfortable in our yard and dig up our plants, dump all over our deck and porch, and tear up our mulch in the front of our house. My mother went to my neighbors this morning before going into town to ask that they keep their chickens in their yard, since it's actually causing damaging to our home. (Like the plant digging, pooping, and then the added on scratches to our deck from their constant visits) But the neighbor just pointed out that we have black berry bushes that are starting to go into her yard (we are literally taking care of them whenever the rain clears, but it's been raining non-stop it seems) and for some reason she also brought up how the back of our house isn't finished being painted?? Then accused us of being the reason why her house has mice. But our other neighbors don't have mice and neither do we so I'm not sure how that works. So in short, they aren't going to do anything. HOA sent us to collections without a bill, despite being on autopay for the past 5 years. Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:18 PM PST Located in Arizona. We purchased our home in 2011 and our HOA was run by Company A with primary contact Karen. In 2014, Company A was acquired by Company B, which sent us notice in early 2015. The primary contact did not change, as Karen was now an employee of Company B. At this time, we set up autopay for our HOA dues with Company B. At the end of 2017, we moved to a new house and rented out this one. We notified Company B, and gave them our new address to which they should send correspondence. All is fine, and in March of 2018 we receive notice via email that the autopay service that is being used is changing, but that no action is required and the autopay will be transferred to the new system. All is still fine, and in June of 2019 we received a letter to our new home address that Company C will be the new HOA management company of the rental house beginning July 2019. The contact at Company C was still Karen, so she most certainly knows how to contact us and had our payment information from the past 8 years. This notice stated that a website will be available soon, and that more information would be sent in May (yes, before this letter was sent) that would include a statement of our account. This is the last and only physical mail we received from Company C. I have received two emails from Company C, one in October 2019, and one just last month, unrelated to billing. We never received further information or a statement of account. We never received notice about the autopayments, nor that we would need to start paying them instead of the prior company. We have not received a single bill. And yet, today at the original home (rental property - my tenant notified me), a letter arrived from a Law Firm stating that my account was in collections due to "HOA DUES 10/1/19 TO 1/30/20" The amount is significantly higher than the dues just for those months, and there is a fee that is even higher than the amount due. Upon looking at my checking account, I see that the last 3 instances the autopayment should have withdrawn, they did not do so. So, I have no problem paying the dues owed to the HOA, but I do not believe it is fair to owe fees when I was not notified of any required changes to payment. I never received notice from Company B that a new company would be taking over, so how can I trust that Company C isn't just some scam? I never received a single bill from Company C, nor a statement of account or even how to pay them. Upon looking up the company name, I found their website which does have a way to process payments. I also found that this Company C only has 3 employees, the main contact is still Karen, and has the same physical address as Company A from years back. Is this just the same company changing names and parking my debt just to try and get more money from fees? What are my options in dealing with this Karen who has been the bane of my existence for the past 9 years. Thanks in advance for your help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:27 PM PST Long story short, I picked up my life and moved over a thousand miles in with my now ex girlfriend. She agreed to let me pick up my finances from a new job and pay off some debts I had before I paid rent. I had agreed to do so when I had the means to do so. We ended up breaking up, because she was cheating on me and she kicked me out. I learned she was cheating on me before I moved down, and did not tell me because although she had wanted to break up, she wanted me to move in with her. She admitted that she knew if I had known, I would have not moved. We had an argument about this, and she threatened to sue me and take me to court if I did not sign a contract saying I would pay her back. I didn't want to be taken to court so I signed it I don't have a good understanding of the law, only what had happened. I feel as though I was coerced into signing the contract. On top of that, I feel as though I was made to agree to this under false pretenses, since she admitted to me that she didn't see a future with us anymore a day after I moved in. Do I have a case? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:02 PM PST Manhattan, NYC, New York. My understanding is that all buildings over six floors must have elevator service. The residential portion of the building (upper floors) has two elevators. One has been broken for maybe two weeks at this point; the other broke a few days ago. We frequently have elevator issues. The building management always apologizes and says they're working on it, but it still happens far too often. Per the title, I live 15 floors above the top of what I'll call service elevators. Some people have it worse (close to 30 floors), but 15 flights of stairs every morning and evening isn't really feasible even without packages or groceries. I came across this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/8v9nmx/ny_all_elevators_broken_in_19story_apartment/ My takeaways:
The thing about the last one is that I didn't see anyone stating definitively whether there is any legal standing for me to ask for recompense. It's most likely in the landlord's best financial interest for me to not renew my lease, so unless I have some legal backing, I am extremely confident that the response will be "sucks to be you". The 'landlord', by the way, is some shell company/LLC; I have only interacted directly with the broker and the manager for my unit (who is completely separate from the building's property manager). So when I say that I would ask the landlord, that means either the management company or the broker. I really don't want to break the lease; even if I was able to avoid paying the remainder of my rent and not end up on a blacklist, moving would still be more of a hassle (though admittedly not by much, especially as the outage continues) and is of course quite expensive. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How to get prison website to remove my information Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:44 AM PST This is a situation occurring in the United States. There is not a particular State affiliation. I searched my full name on Google back in December, and discovered that this online background prison website listed me as either in prison or currently on supervised parole/probation. They even put a link to a Department of Corrections inmate number on there, and I clicked it and it leads to nothing. I have never had any run-ins with the law either than traffic tickets, so I am perplexed why they are listing me as in prison or on parole. That website's policy even states that if the information is incorrect, that you can email them to remove the information. I have emailed the website admin on multiple occasions since early December and have received no response. Is there anything I can do about this situation? I should also mention that a similar situation occurred last summer with another website (I can't recall the name), and I emailed that website, and they removed the information immediately. I can't disclose the name of the website because that violates Rule 2. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:11 PM PST Disclaimer: We were drunk when this happened. Me and my girlfriend visited italy recently. We got separated on a night out and she was apparently found nude on the street according to the medical professionals. There is a few things that do not ring true to this - she had a phone the entire time and never messaged me to say she was in trouble. When I saw her in the hospital she was in entirely the same dress as when I left her. No signs of struggle or ripped clothing. Not changed into new clothing - so she was ? changed back into her original clothing. No memory of anything like that happening. Yes we were drinking but not black out. She does not believe anything untoward happened. When I got back to the hotel I was visited by some police who said they had found her - again no mention of the apparent circumstance and that I should go find her in this hospital. I visited the hospital. She was there and was confused and didn't really understand her rights. They told her eplcicity that because she was found in the way she was she had no right to leave. When I tried to explain this simply wasnt the case unless she being sectioned (and asked them if she was) they threw me out the hospital. They called the police and made me delete a video I took when they said this (although I just coppied it and still have it). They took my passport and kept it for 5 hours, I called my embassy who said basically just obey police orders to avoid getting arrested. My question is is what they did right and legal. If it is fine. If not what can I do? [link] [comments] |
